Swedish Parliament recognized Armenian Genocide

21:23 / 03/11/2010Yesterday, Swedish Parliament decided to consider the resolution on recognition of the massacres of Armenians in Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide, Swedish media say.

Thus, parliament went against the government line, having the red-green opposition suggesting that the massacres of Armenians, Assyrians, Syrians, Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks during World War I committed in Ottoman Empire to be called a genocide. The non-socialist parties threw the proposal reasoning that politicians are not going to write the history. However, a number of conservative MPs voted for the resolution, which resulted in proposal passing by a casting vote — 131 against 130.

According to the experts, it may have been up to 2.5 million people lost their lives. Turkey negates that there was a genocide.

And Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Sweden. Turkey said that this will have drastic consequences for the Swedish-Turkish relations.

Sweden`s Parliament just recently recognized the Genocide Against The Armenians, Assyrians and Pontian Greeks.

This was extremely close.

131 voted in favour to recognize the Genocide Against The Armenians, Assyrians and Pontian Greeks while 130 voted against recognition.

Alexandros, did you watch the debates ?

How many politicians said Ottoman Turkey was "innocent" and how many said the issue was "undecided" ?

That's the important question.

I doubt any one said any of that. The only reason they could bring is that they do not want to spoil relations with turkey.

That's the important question.

I did watch the debates and the irony is that even those(members of the center-right coalition who is in power) who voted against recogntition, acknowledged that the Ottoman state indeed had committed a genocide against the Armenians, Assyrians and the Pontian Greeks but their argument was that it shouldn`t be the Swedish parliament to recognize genocides but rather Sweden`s judicial institutions or international law bodies to do that.

Another argument that was used by the "Nay"-sayers was that there was an agreement between the center-right parties to not recognize the genocide and therefore this agreement should be respected. Other "Nay"-sayers who even had co-sponsored the Genocide resolution but later got cold feet made the argument that they had to withdraw their support because there wasn`t a comprehensive majority among the Swedish parties and therefore couldn`t support the bill. They thought that it would be better to wait to next year when there would be probably more parties to support the Genocide bill.

Then there were those who thought that this was an issue for historians to deal with and not the politicians.

Great news. What makes it great is that it recognizes the Assyrian, Armenian, and Pontic Greek genocide. It was after all a genocide of Christian minorities in Turkey/Ottoman Empire. We should all be working together and that has always beens the weakness of the recognition cause; it was inability to work together. The Assyrian community which has a large diaspora in Sweden was the driving force.

In addition that Turkey now has recalled its ambassador to Sweden, Turkey`s Prime Minister Tayip Erdogan has canceled his trip to Sweden.

Turkey recalls ambassador from Sweden over Armenian genocide vote

Ankara. Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Sweden for consultations after the Swedish parliament approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire, local media reported, RIA Novosti reported.

Turkey has also canceled a scheduled visit of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Scandinavian country.

Ankara last week recalled its ambassador to the United States for consultations after the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives voted in support of a resolution condemning as genocide the killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by Turks during World War I.
