Zeev Elkin: it is high time to stop pleasing Turkey and recognize Armenian Genocide
    May 19, 2011 - 16:14 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net - Knesset member, Likud party chairman Zeev Elkin supported the Armenian Genocide recognition by Israel.
In his address to the Israeli parliament, Elkin said that the xxxish state, which reverently treats the memory of the Holocaust victims and demands other countries’ respectful attitude towards it, has no moral right to ignore the tragedy of the Armenian people.
“The Israeli state, which demands worldwide recognition of the historical justice and observance of moral norms, cannot act contrary to these urges, being guided by narrow political ideas. It is high time to stop pleasing Turkey and eventually recognize the Armenian Genocide. The xxxish state should have been among the first ones to declare its official recognition,” IzRus portal quoted Elkin as saying.
A vote for transferring the issue of Armenian Genocide recognition to the committee of Education, Culture and Sports headed by Alex Miller was held in Knesset, with the initiative unilaterally approved on May 18.
The initiative was advanced by a member of the Knesset for Meretz Zahava Gal-On who replaced the head of the party, main lobbyist of Armenia Haim Oron.

Israeli parliamentary committee accepts demand to discuss Armenian Genocide

        May 20, 2011 | 10:03

The Committee on Education, Culture and Sports of the Israeli Knesset accepted the demand to discuss the Armenian Genocide recognition in the parliament.

“Meretz” party submitted the issue for discussion in the committee, Turkish TRT reports. “Likud” party, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also supported the initiative. The demand to discuss the recognition of the Armenian Genocide was adopted by majority vote.

All the participants at the meeting of the Knesset, including the Speaker of Parliament, spoke for the discussion of the Armenian Genocide. They also noted that relations between Israel and Turkey cannot become a reason for non-recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

It is our moral obligation to recognize Armenian Genocide – Israeli MP

                      May 22, 2011 | 00:40
Israel’s Knesset member Zahava Gal-On believes it is Israel’s obligation to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Member of left wing New Movement Meretz party commented for Armenian News-NEWS.am on decision to discuss the Armenian Genocide. She noted that this year’s debates are important as they are held in open Committee on Education, Culture and Sports.

“In the last two years Knesset decided to hold discussion of the Armenian Genocide issue in one of the committees but they never discussed in the education committee which is open. We can invite many people to participate in the discussion. It is very important from this viewpoint,” she said.

Speaking of the timing of this decision, Gal-On stressed every year representatives of Meretz party raise the issue on the Armenian Genocide in the parliament. This time Israeli government and foreign ministry, due to the issues with the Turkish government, were more flexible on the issue, she assumed.

The MP expressed hope Israel will recognize the Armenian Genocide and that decision “will open new relations between the countries.”

“It is our moral obligation but it is really hard to estimate what will happen,” she concluded.

The Committee on Education, Culture and Sports of the Israeli Knesset accepted the demand to discuss the Armenian Genocide recognition in the parliament. Meretz party submitted the issue for discussion in the committee. The demand to discuss the recognition of the Armenian Genocide was adopted by majority vote.
