    ZURICH — The signing of an accord to restore diplomatic ties between Turkey and Armenia was delayed at the last minute Saturday due to concerns over the wording of the final statement the parties will make.

    U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton abruptly returned to her hotel just before she was to attend the signing ceremony.

    "We're facilitating the two sides on coming to an agreement on the statements they are going to make at the ceremony," said State Department spokesman Ian Kelley.

    Diplomats said the Armenians were concerned about wording in the Turkish statement that was to be made after the signing ceremony.

    An aide to Clinton was meeting with the Armenians and was talking by telephone with the Turks to work out the problem, said the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

      France 24 correspondence Jasper Mortimer from Ankara says that it is more likely that the issue of Nagorno Karabakh, to which Turkey wants to link the signature of protocols with Armenia has caused the delay. Turkey and Armenia abruptly postponed the signature of the protocols aimed at normalizing the relations.

      According to AP in post-signature statement Turkey wanted to mention Nagorno Karabakh apeasing the hearts of its friends in Azerbaijan that unless Nagorno Karabakh issue is settled borders with Armenia will not open. That was something that according Anadolu Ajansi was reported this morning by Turkish PM Erdogan as well.

      Armenian site, and the protocols have no mentioning or linking of the documents or the process to the issue of Nagorno Karabakh. Event the mediators of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Minsk Group, said few days ago in Yerevan that these are two separate processes.

      Many people are very skeptical about Turkish sincereity in normalizing relations with Armenia. While these protocols do not in any way mention the word Karabakh and don't link the Turkish Armenian normalization with Nagorno Karabakh Process, Prime Minister of Turkey Mr. Erdogan today told Turkish Anadolu Ajansi that Turkey will not take any steps that would place Azerbaijan in difficulty. Asked if the issue of opening borders with Armenian are parallel to the developments in Upper Karabakh, Erdogan said that "yes, we can say so in a way."

      It is not understood what is "yes" and what "in a way" means.

      The signature of the protocols was about to take place in a country that has recognized the events of the 1915 as genocide and has a law condemning it and punishing those who deny it. More than 20 countries, including France and Switzerland have recognized the Armenian Genocide that Turkey in 1915 carried a systematic policy of anihilating 1.5 million Armenians.

      Turkey denies it. It has hard for them to accept that their grandfathers were murderers and is a part of national pride, said the France 24 reporter this morning from Ankara. However, it was not the Turkish people who organized the Armenian genocide, but the regime of the day, which was the govenment of the Young Turks. No one today blames the German Nation for the xxxish Holocaust, but the Nazi Regime.

      While Turkey has shown some sings of change in its society such as openly discussing the role of the military, Kurdish Opening and the Armenian Protocols, observers say it's not enough. Turkey has to come clean with its past and see what it takes to bring justice to the millions of souls and their children and grandchildren who call for justice.

        Fingers crossed.

        If there are revisions in the protocol to placate the Turks why can't the Armenian side introduce
        their revisions to straighten their co.ckups (forgive the pun !!)
        Politics is not about the pursuit of morality nor what's right or wrong
        Its about self interest at personal and national level often at odds with the above.
        Great politicians pursue the National interest and small politicians personal interests

          As per Novosti-Armenia, protocols signing ceremony will take place 11pm-yerevan time

                Exactly, Turks are trying to add more conditions , while we're on the defensive??
