  • Review: Burn After Reading

Well, the Coen Brothers (whom I love from past) were trying to achieve something here, but I don't know what. It seems like this movie was the Coen Brothers attempting to re-create another film that mimics The Big Lebowski in its style and humor (although this would be more dark comedy), when I compare it to The Big Lebowski (my favorite film of all time), it fails horribly. However, on its own, the movie is not so bad. It has some nice dark humor which is amusing at many points and funny (if you're into dark humor).

The problem I had with this movie was it was too drastic. It seems as if the characters were just thrown in together for some reason, and I don't know what. I could see what they were trying to achieve, but it failed in the execution stage. That's where The Big Lebowski succeeded. I will say that I loved John Malkovich and to a lesser extent, Brad Pitt, as I thought these two stole the show. George Clooney was okay as well. Frances McDormand was ugly and annoying.

    I give this movie a C.

This is a better reaction for me than the first time I saw The Big Lebowski. When I saw it first, I hated it, but upon second viewing, I liked it, and third, it was love. Perhaps this will be the same, but I doubt it.

    Good review.

I think I will feel the same way, even though I love dark comedy.

They were all ugly and annoying, except for Tilda Swinton.

Have the Coens heard of the term closure?

It's not the worst film of the year (The Happening is), but it's pretty underwhelming and disappointing considering the cast and directors.
