The greateness that is Tool

tool is one of my favs!! tehyre so talented. when you listen to tehir music there are so many thing to focus on and its cool how they take one part of a song and make a whole song out of it by constantly changeing it a little like in 46and2.

What they do a lot of is metric modulation, where there are several different time signatures going simultaneously, yet they all loop around to even out by the time the main time signature completes. It gives the song many different levels and angles to look at it from, which is why it can sound completely different depending on what you're focusing on each time you hear it. For example, in Lateralus, if you listen to the part just after the break of "reaching out to embrace whatever my come", the bass starts one meter, the cymbals come in to start another, and then the drums add a third, yet they all fit. If you just let go and feel the music while you're listening to it, it almost feels like the music is creating a spiral effect, which is the main message of the song, to spiral out and explore.

On this next album, I guess they're going to get even deeper and more complex with the metric modulation. That'll just be crazy and stuff. Oh, and if you haven't seen them live, you haven't seen a live show yet.

I saw them live; it was a waste of money. All they have to offer goes into their albums. I would prefer to see two good shows at a fusion club instead.

DAMN it, Dusken. This whole "I've evolved to a higher degree of music, and now realize Tool sucks" mentality is growing tiresome. I don't believe for a second that you despise them this much. I think you're just trying to present yourself as this super enlightened musician who's above the typical musician and music listener. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but you speak of Tool with the reverence of a mortal enemy, not just a "band you don't care for anymore". The show was a waste of money??? Yeah, I suppose if you were looking for some long haired, wife-beating piece of sh*t run up and down the stage, off pitch, singing to off tempo music. If you want to merely watch people play their instruments in person, than yeah, I guess they wouldn't be your type of live band. I personally LOVE the fact that they stay in the shadows while they play. This isn't about them. It's about the art, and they make sure that stands out. And it's not just me. I can honestly say you are the first person I've talked to who's gone to a Tool show, and been disappointed. No, I'm not exaggerating, I've NEVER heard a negative comment about one of their shows before, and while you may think so, I highly doubt you're more enlightened about music then all of those people.

When I was in line to buy tickets to my first show (which I didn't get, because it sold out in 11 seconds, and I was 3rd in line ), I was chatting with some of the people in line. I mentioned I've never been to a live concert before, and the whole line turned around and stared at me. This one guy goes "your first show is going to be a Tool show??? Buddy, you're going to be ruined for all other shows after this. You'll NEVER walk away from another show happy". And after seeing them live twice, I can't imagine that being untrue.

I've talked to a LOT of people who are well versed in the process of creating the art, and/or are musicians themselves (as is to be expected when you bring up Tool). They bear plenty of knowledge about music, past and present, and have nothing but the upmost respect for Tool and their ability, weather they like their style, or not. To give them as little credit as you do is absurd. You make them sound like some high school garage band, when what they do can't be done by probably 3/4 of past and present musicians. Rather than saying you've found SOOOO much music on higher level, I dare ask, are you sure you completely understand the complexity of Tool's music, and all it entails? For example, did you even realize what I stated in my first post about the lyrical structure of Lateralus before I posted it? I'm not asking you to "love them" or consider them "the greatest". That's a personal preference. I'm just wondering why you have so much hostility towards them.
