I am my own mechaninc. i never let anyone touch my car. I'ver rebuilt engine, removed/replaced clutches..etc etc. The most Honest mechanic is myself.

Some I know think they get better service by going to the dealer. Maybe, or maybe not. Maybe ?

If it's under warranty, take it to the dealer. You've already paid for it. If it's out of warranty, stay as far away from the dealer as possible ... unless it's a desparate / emergency type of situation and you don't mind spending 3x-10x what the job/parts are worth.

That's right. Dealer's rip you off. My car's under warranty for 4 years, and it's a 3 year rental. Go figure. Any problems, I'll take it to the dealer, even though I work for Discount Tires. I rather have the dealer do it for free, then spend our work time/money.

If it's under warranty, take it to the dealer. You've already paid for it. If it's out of warranty, stay as far away from the dealer as possible ... unless it's a desparate / emergency type of situation and you don't mind spending 3x-10x what the job/parts are worth.

I know people (who are really smart people) who buy all their cars from the same dealer--have for decades. They get all their service (even oil changes) done at that same dealer. I've tried asking why? One answer they gave me: because the resale is better when there is a dealer service record. LOL... but they 'sell' as trade-in right back to the dealer (and they even don't try to bargain much with the new car, either). Argh. That's more of a 'we do what we've always done' issue rather than any other reason. Maybe they get great/fast/priority service or something? I know that the dealer loans them a new car while theirs is worked on (likely whatever the dealer would like to sell them next. )

I've spent enough time in other countries to KNOW that price is always negotiable--anywhere--especially with car repairs. [But I should also mention that the incidents that I mentioned at the start of this thread had nothing to do with negotiation... only honest/good guys.]

Why don't you all post prices of the things mechanics charged you? Whether it's a flat tire repair, or a tune-up. Whatever it is. I'm interested on how badly they ripped you off.

This car forum category should be broader--cars and computers, [technology in general?], etc.

Where do I post a question about finding a good 'mechanic' for my laptop that screeches at me [literally] when I try to turn it on. I'm guessing that fixing the problem with my laptop would be more expensive than getting a different one (often the case with cars, too.) That shouldn't be the case.

The last work done on my Jeep was free--because I did it.

Dude, about a year and a half ago my girlfriend went to a Jiffy Lube to get an oil change and they convinced her she needed a bunch of other xxxx done. I never checked to see exactly what they did, but I would assume changing all of her filters, maybe flushing the radiator or something, plus their regular stuff. She got charged over $500 for all that. Her dad was pissed off.
