    'At war'

Georgian forces launched the latest in a series of artillery attacks on Tskhinvali early on Saturday, according to a South Ossetian government spokeswoman.

Russian forces said they had fought back, and fierce clashes were reported by Russian news agencies overnight.

Georgia meanwhile said that Russia had launched air strikes on targets outside of South Ossetia, in what it described as "a full-scale military invasion".

The Georgian authorities also said they were expecting a Russian attack on the capital, Tbilisi, and have evacuated some government offices in the city.

Georgian President Saakashvili said Russia was at war with his country.

Late on Friday, the Georgian national security council said Mr Saakashvili was poised to declare a state of emergency.
    Take Georgia over!

Baku Hails Georgian Attack, Says Precedent for Karabakh

BAKU--Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry issued a statement Friday supporting Georgia's attack on the unrecognized South Ossetian republic, signaling the possibility that Azerbaijan might seek a similar course of action with the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

The statement described Georgia's military offensive against South Ossetia as a positive precedent for countries seeking to use military force to restore "territorial integrity."

"Georgia has proven that peaceful talks are not the only way to restore territorial integrity," the statement said. "[Azerbaijan] has the right to return its lands by use of force."

Georgian troops launched a major military attack against South Ossetia's capital of Tskhinvali on Friday in a bid to regain control over the unrecognized republic. The attack prompting a furious response from Russia--which sent tanks, jets and ground forces to defend province, which won defacto independence in a war that ended in 1992.

On Monday, Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said that if a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not found Azerbaijan may choose other ways to “liberate the occupied regions.”

Although official statements claim that peace talks between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been positive, official Baku continues to express frustration with the pace of negotiations, claiming that it is its right to reassert its "territorial integrity" by force if necessary.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan met on August 1in Moscow for the third time in as many months to try to bridge the two countries' differences over a framework peace agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh proposed by international mediators. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisian had their first face-to-face meeting in Saint Petersburg in early June. The three co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, mediating for a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh Conflict since 1992, have described the meetings as positive and hopeful.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, however, has grown frustrated by peace talks in recent months and has been hardening his war rhetoric, threatening to use his country's growing oil wealth to launch a full-scale war to occupy Nagorno-Karabakh and "restore its territorial integrity."

The atmosphere has been tense ever since Aliyev said in early June that although Azerbaijan would continue to take political steps to recover Karabakh and neighboring territories under Armenian control, “we should be ready to liberate our lands in a military way at any time.” He added that Azerbaijan's army was the strongest in the region.

On March 4, Azeri Armed Forces violated the Nagorno-Karabakh Ceasefire line and opened fire on Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Army positions northeast of the Martakert Region, temporarily capturing a Karabakh defense position.

The attack, which was followed by protracted skirmishes throughout the month, was considered by Armenian officials and international mediators as unprecedented in its scale.
I wonder what the Azerbaboonjan thinks now. They may want to reconsider their views regarding Russia and the idiocy of attacking Artsakh.

The Official Statement by President Medvedev On The Situation in South Ossetia

At a meeting with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, the President declared:

“Russia has maintained and continues to maintain a presence on Georgian territory on an absolutely lawful basis, carrying out its peacekeeping mission in accordance with the agreements concluded. We have always considered maintaining the peace to be our paramount task. Russia has historically been a guarantor for the security of the peoples of the Caucasus, and this remains true today.

Last night, Georgian troops committed what amounts to an act of aggression against Russian peacekeepers and the civilian population in South Ossetia. What took place is a gross violation of international law and of the mandates that the international community gave Russia as a partner in the peace process.

Georgia’s acts have caused loss of life, including among Russian peacekeepers. The situation reached the point where Georgian peacekeepers opened fire on the Russian peacekeepers with whom they are supposed to work together to carry out their mission of maintaining peace in this region. Civilians, women, children and old people, are dying today in South Ossetia, and the majority of them are citizens of the Russian Federation.

In accordance with the Constitution and the federal laws, as President of the Russian Federation it is my duty to protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they may be.

It is these circumstances that dictate the steps we will take now. We will not allow the deaths of our fellow citizens to go unpunished. The perpetrators will receive the punishment they deserve.”

Officials: Exercises unrelated to friction between Moscow, ex-Soviet state

VAZIANI, Georgia - One thousand U.S. troops began a military training exercise in Georgia on Tuesday against a backdrop of growing friction between Georgia and neighboring Russia.
Officials said the exercise, called "Immediate Response 2008," had been planned for months and was not linked to a stand-off between Moscow and Tbilisi over two Russian-backed separatists regions of Georgia.
The United States is an ally of Georgia and has irritated Russia by backing Tbilisi's bid to join the NATO military alliance.
"The main purpose of these exercises is to increase the cooperation and partnership between U.S. and Georgian forces," Brig. Gen. William B. Garrett, commander of the U.S. military's Southern European Task Force, told reporters.
The war games involve 600 Georgian troops and smaller numbers from ex-Soviet Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

I agree. The Gurji Turks have no understanding of Christian brotherhood. They have maltreated Armenians for many years. I have no remorse as I watch their misfortune. What comes around goes around.

About a dozen Russian soldiers are killed. The attackers on them included members of what was supposed to act as a Georgian peace-keeping force. The civilian deaths are in the dozens and continue to mount. Most of these old folk, women and children were Russian passport holders.

It hurts Armenia in the short term but somehow they have been able to manage periodically when the border has been shut. The situation cannot last too long as Georgia will eventually come to its senses. Iran has been a reliable and growing conduit for trade.

Who knows, if the Abkhaz start into with the Georgians and the Javakh Armenians organize, Armenia may very well one-day have direct access to the Black Sea...g*d willing.
