Pregnant widow accused of adultery executed by Taliban

The Taliban have been fighting Afghan and coalition forces for control of Afghanistan.
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The Taliban has executed a pregnant widow accused of adultery in western Afghanistan, provincial and district officials said Monday.

The 47-year-old woman, Sanam Gul, also known as Sanam Bibi, was killed in Badghis province Saturday morning, said Ashrafuddin Majidi, the provincial governor's spokesman.

The district governor of Qades, Hashim Habibi, confirmed the execution. He said the woman was accused of adultery that left her pregnant. The Taliban shadow district governor, Mullah Abdul Hakim, and his judge ordered the woman to be executed, he said.

Mohammad Yousuf, a Taliban commander, carried out the execution, shooting the woman in her head, Habibi said.

The International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan condemned the killing. "This tragic gruesome brutality is an example of Taliban justice," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, director of the ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center. "This is not what the people of Afghanistan want -- they want peace and freedom and that's what we're going to help provide."

The statement from the ISAF cited reports that the widow was whipped 200 times before she was shot.

Gotta love the Zionist propaganda. This is right up there with the 72 virgins. This won't help the war effort any, just like Korea it's a lost cause because Afghans don't like it when their sons are killed and their wives and daughters are raped and brutalized by foreign occupiers. The Koreans didn't care much for it either.

So are you saying this is a made up story? What exactly isn't "Zionist Propaganda" in your eyes?

HERAT: The Taliban publicly flogged and then executed a pregnant Afghan widow by emptying three shots into her head for alleged adultery, police said on Monday.

Bibi Sanubar, 35, was kept in captivity for three days before she was shot dead in a public trial on Sunday by a local Taliban commander in the Qadis district of the rural western province Badghis.

The Taliban accused Sanubar of having an “illicit affair” that left her pregnant. She was first punished with 200 lashes in public before being shot, deputy provincial police chief Ghulam Mohammad Sayeedi told AFP.

“She was shot in the head in public while she was still pregnant,” Sayeedi said.

The execution is a grim reminder of the Taliban's harsh six-year rule from 1996 to 2001 in Afghanistan. The radical extremists staged public stonings or lashings of those found to have committed adultery or sex outside marriage.

The then-Taliban government would also chop off the hands and feet of those accused of theft and robbery.

Local Taliban commander Mohammad Yousuf carried out the execution, Sayeedi said, before the woman's body was dumped in an area under government control.

The man who allegedly had an affair with Sanubar has not been punished.

Head of Badghis provincial council Mohammad Nasir Nazaari confirmed the execution and said the Qadis district is entirely under Taliban control.

The deputy head of the religious council for western Afghanistan, Mohammad Kabaabiani, said the execution ran counter to Islamic principles.

Head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission in western Afghanistan, Abdul Qadir Rahimi, condemned the killing.

“Any such trial is unacceptable and is a violation of human rights. All trials must take place in an authorised court observing every single measure of justice,” said Rahimi.

Since their ouster in 2001, the hardline Taliban militants have executed many people they accused of spying for foreign forces, including at least one woman who was shot dead in Kandahar.

The Taliban publicly whipped then executed a pregnant widow for an alleged "illicit affair", then dumped her body in a government-controlled area, the police said Monday. The killing is a grim reminder of the Taliban's regime in the late 1990s.

AFP - The Taliban publicly flogged and then executed a pregnant Afghan widow by firing three shots into her head for alleged adultery, police said on Monday.

The then-Taliban government would also chop off the hands and feet of those accused of theft and robbery.

But a Taliban spokesman denied Monday that the militia was responsible for Sanubar's death.

"We have not done anything like that in Badghis or any other province," said Qari Yosuf Ahmadi, calling the report "propaganda" by foreigners and the Western-backed Afghan government.

The Taliban is not a unified national movement and small groups operate shadow government structures autonomously in pockets of the insurgent south.

Taliban Executes Pregnant Woman in Afghanistan

Afghan police say Taliban insurgents have flogged and publicly executed a pregnant Afghan widow for alleged adultery.

Authorities say Taliban militants kept the woman in captivity for three days before her execution Sunday in a remote area of northwestern Badghis province. They say she was first flogged 200 times and then shot in the head three times.

Officials say a Taliban court had found the woman guilty of having an "illicit affair" that left her pregnant.

Afghan police say a local Taliban commander, Mohammad Yousuf, carried out the execution, but a Taliban spokesman Monday denied that the group was responsible.

The unidentified man who had the alleged affair with the widow has not been punished.

NATO condemned the killing in a statement Monday. The alliance said, in its words, the "tragic, gruesome brutality is an example of Taliban justice."

During the Taliban's harsh six-year rule in Afghanistan, the radical Islamists would often stage public stonings or lashings of women found guilty of adultery.

My point is this story comes from the AFP which is a news press in France and there are no other reporters reporting the story so whether it's true or false can't be proven. It's not eye witness reporting. How is it that the Taliban can still govern and keep up with peoples' private affairs while trying to fight off the world's best armies.... My guess is they have a folder full of these stories and they throw them up for "moral" support so the liberals don't get on their case about war making them feel sympathetic towards the poor women in Afghanistan even though the military operation has nothing to do with "liberating" Afghanistan.
