OTTAWA -x Canadians will be taking to the streets in at least three cities across Canada to show their support for anti-government unrest in Egypt.

Rallies are scheduled be held in in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Ottawa, at the Egyptian consulate in Montreal and in Dundas Square in Toronto.

Ottawa, meanwhile is urging the government of the North African country to respect democracy and the rule of law in the face of mass demonstrations, as well as to unblock Internet sites shut down by the government in an apparent bid to stifle dissent.

"Canada regrets the loss of life of both protesters and police officers during political demonstrations in Egypt," said Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon in a statement released Friday.

"We urge all parties to refrain from violence, and, in particular, we urge the Egyptian authorities to respond to these protests peacefully."

Hundreds of protesters have been arrested in Egypt and there have been widespread reports of brutal tactics by security forces.

Unrest has been spreading across the Arab world following a revolt in Tunisia that ousted dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali this month.

Along with Tunisia and Egypt, some 10,000 people took to the streets in Yemen on Thursday.

Western media's barely covering this even though it's the biggest thing in the region in a quarter century. They JUST burned the ruling party's headquarters in Cairo, watching it on Al-Jazeera. Tanks on the streets now, armoured vehicles burning. Crazy stuff.

The US and the west wants to keep the same dictators in power and claims this is a good time for them to "introduce reform". That's western democracy for you, more of the same with different advertisement.

With Tunisian president Ben Ali now gone from the country after some 24 odd years in power, the entire Middle East is on the streets trying to copycat the Tunisian street revolution that was sparked (literally) by an unemployed graduate student setting himself on fire after the police confiscated his vegetables that he was trying to sell on the street without a license.

Egypt, Yemen, Algeria and Jordan have all seen similar protests since the Tunisian revolt. I'm watching Al-Jazeera live and cop cars are burning in Egypt, something nobody could have imagined in the last 30 years.
