    Re: School Talk!

i have no clue what I'm majoring in, i wanted to go to film school but it didn't work out, and texas has no good film schools anyways. So currently I'm "undecided" and it's gonna be major in business or political science and minor in English or Spanish, and then I'm going to go to law school.

I was majoring in music at the state college here in RI. Although I got straight-A's both semesters, I felt that it wasn't the right place for me in terms of academics, atmosphere, and the general defeatest attitude of the students. I did enjoy my guitar and music theory classes, but something still wasn't *there* so I decided to take a year out and apply to some new schools. Maybe the institutionalization of music is what reduced my love for it - or maybe it's just a phase. Maybe because I was focused on music so much for my entire teenage years that when I got to where I 'wanted to be', it wasn't fulfilling enough. Right now I am looking at schools on both the East and West Coast that are centered around large Armenian communities, mainly Boston and LA.

I intend to major in Russian language and possibly minor in Classical Guitar/Music. Ever since I was little (6 years old) I have loved languages and would go to the library and check out different books, but I never fully realized this until I started learning Armenian in December. I have been fairly successful with it but I definitely have much learning to do. Hopefully if I stick with the Russian degree, I can help our Republic in the future although I am not at all certain as to what this would entail. All I can do for now is pray that God will lead me in the right direction.

Unless you plan getting a post graduate degree, do not go for a poli sci (or any other liberal arts) degree. It's not a marketable degree.

Sip is right, don't waste time on Animation if you want to go for Plastic Surgeon. That's not to say Animation is a waste of time, it's just to say becoming a Plastic Surgeon takes much more time and effort than you may think.

But to answer your question, no, you won't have to do your GE's over again. You'll just have to take your undergraduate courses and work your way to a BA in Biology (or whatever it may be). You should definitely think about this now before you waste any more time. Good luck.

              Re: School Talk!

I'm currently attending Los Angeles City College. I am applying for film school this Fall, most applications are due sometime between November-March.

After this semester, I won't have any GE classes left. I'm still going to take classes at LACC next Spring because I won't hear from film school until late Spring for admission in Fall 2009.

That's interesting. Someone from Glendale takes classes at LACC. Is it because of film school?

I miss living in Hollywood, driving by http://www.lafilm.com/.

                Or UCLA or USC.

I've been living in Burbank for nearly two years now.

I was working in Los Angeles up until this February, so it was much more convientiant to go to LACC then work (or vice versa). But yes, LACC has one of the, if not, strongest film departments in the nation -- as far as city/community colleges go. The film classes there are taught my professors from USC, UCLA, and other notable film schools. We also have guest professors who are professional cinemtagraphers, editors, directors, etc. That's pretty good for a city college!

Not to metion, Robert Elswit (cinematographer of There Will Be Blood) was as a student here in the 70s!

With that in mind, I have a plan, but I'm not sure if it is possible.

Well, to start things off, I first wanted to attend a private Art School called The Art Center, but the tuition is too much, and I'd rather go to a different school.

So, I currently got 36 units. I'm taking 16 now, and I wanna transfer to CSUN to get my Bachelors in Animation, which will take me an additional 2 years.

But I also wanna be a Plastic Surgeon, and I have to first get a Bachelors in Biology [or whatever it is to become a Plastic Surgeon].
If you're serious about becoming a plastic surgeon, I suggest you take some serious time and research the field of medicine and what it takes to get into a US school. You don't need a biology degree to get into medical school; you just need excellent grades, all of the required pre-requisite classes, and excellent MCAT scores.

On top of that, most that go to medical school do quite a bit of research, so unless you get near perfect scores, you'll also have to do quite a bit of biology/science related research. This will be tough at CSUN, since they don't have nearly as many research projects to get into as UC schools do. Nor do their prerequisite classes yield the kind of MCAT scores that come out of the UCs (though this is individual based). UCLA, UCI, UCSD, UCB, UCSB are all excellent feeder schools with great research opportunities, so this should be your primary aim. You can get into them with some sort of design degree, and take all of your prereqs there. It may take you 3-4 years instead of 2 years, but you'll need to take your time in order to ensure good grades. Feeder schools are basically schools that Medschools look at as breeding grounds for generally good medschool candidates.

It's actually good to have a non-biology degree as medschools like to diversify their student body, but you'll pretty much need ATLEAST a 3.5 gpa including all prereqs, with excellent MCATs, research, volunteer work, etc etc to have a shot at getting into a US medschool.

Once you're in medschool, that's when you can decide on which specialty to go into, and plastic surgery is possibly one of the hardest to get into, and will take another 6 years of residency on top of the 4 years of medschool.

Not trying to shatter any dreams, just make sure you know what you're getting into and the amount of dedication it takes, as it's somewhat heartbreaking when I see students with MD, DDS, PharmD dreams going to school and treating Bs as acceptable grades in their classes, let alone prereqs.

Good starting point would be www.studentdoctor.net
