Re: Keeping Cpu Safe & Clean

I use the free AVG antivirus on my personal windows machines. I don't run anything special on my linux (ubuntu) machines. I have a basic firewall on my router at home. Once in a while I'll run SpyBot to check for spyware. I am in general pretty careful on what I run on my PCs so I haven't really had a trouble with a virus or spyware other than the crap that was spreading a while back through just windows RPC vulnerabilities (was like 4 or 5 years ago ... Melisa?)

Of course there could be stuff running on my pc that I don't know about
    this post = teh win.

Re: Keeping Cpu Safe & Clean

        I use a combination of:

SuperAntiSpyware (great free utility to start off with)
        Spybot
        Highjack This
        BruteforceUninstaller + Alcanshorty.bfu
Uniblue Powersuite (an essential of mine)
Advanced WindowsCare V2 Pro (quite handy)
Kelly's Corner registry fixes (against nasty viruses that ruin your interface) - http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

I loath AVG and all the standard anti-spyware that come with your computers, they are weak in detecting the real xxxx that infects most computers overtime. I haven't needed to reformat my computer in over two years because I kept it clean with the utilities I listed before. My computer works perfectly and I've learned a lot about the software and registry through my active approach in keeping it clean. The only problem I have these days is finding out where a DNS changer trojan is coming from that infects my computer every couple of days. I have to go into the registry using regedit and delete a couple of keys to get rid of it. I wish I could just block it from the start but I don't know how.

Also, if you have a virus that blocks your desktop and start button, navigate using the browse feature in your task bar. Also, I encourage you to load windows under safe mode when your computer is acting funny, it blocks a lot of the things malware and trojans like to mess with and gives more of the corrupted interface make to your hands.

I use Trend Micro and am very happy with it... takes care of all that stuff and updates multiple times a day for maximum protection.

Re: Keeping Cpu Safe & Clean

you think you don't have the problems I notice because it doesn't turn up on the avg virus scan :P But chances are you won't have the DNS changer problem, it's kind of rare.

AVG free here. I think it works fine.
