Apparently you didn't read the website, so shut up. Tolkien wasn't a moron writing this. Have you read his works, or his letters? He knew about technology since if you had read the article his closest loved ones died in the Great War which introduced a whole new array of weapons from the industrial revolution.

This isn't simply about technology, just read the damn article and stop spouting misinformed opinions.

Maybe they should get into the UFC ring and go at it.

Yes, anon, I have read Tolkein, and I'm not just talking about the Hobbit and the Rings trilogy. I wasn't in any way suggesting Tolkein was a moron. I can see that whoever wrote that article probably read Tolkein too, especially his letters and spoken word. I was merely suggesting (in quite an exaggerated way, which is the best way to let it out when you feel like it) that some things should just be left alone sometimes.

Hell I can go off on another tangent too. Did you know that The Hobbit (that would be the story of Bilbo Baggins...) was published in 1937, which as you will recall my history loving friend, was the time period when the nazi party was coming to power in Germany? Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy during the 1940s. So you agree with the machine having a hold over us theory? Let me tell you what I agree with...

Perhaps the books are just a great metaphor for the war? The "evil in the East" Sauron, was Hitler, while Saruman, the lesser but just as evil character, was Mussolini. Sauron's army of Orcs were the nazi stormtroopers of course while the Nazgul were the SS. The British were the Hobbits, peaceful child-like people who love food and drink and are terribly naiive about the forces of Darkness stirring next door to them. The Elves are the Americans. They are allies and, after the conclusion of the War against Mordor, leave to go west over the ocean. Denethor is established as a symbol of paranoia that threatens to break apart the allies when he takes his own life, much like the USSR did when it signed its peace treaty with Nazi Germany against a Western alliance who hoped to isolate and confine Nazism. I will not go on, even though there is plenty more....

This is not a battle of wits. Had it been a battle of wits, I'm sure neither of us would be sitting here using other peoples websites when we can very well do the job of telling eachother whats what in our own words. I did not tell you to shut up. I really do think/know/understand that even beyond the War and age of the machine theories, etc, there is A LOT of hidden meaning, DEEPER hidden meaning to be found in Tolkeins works, and I for one was sick of hearing the 'negative' crap. If you look hard enough, I think, you will be able to find the 'negative' in anything. I think the real pity is no one this day an age, when, you're right, we live and breathe and work our fingers to the bone for the xxxxing 'machine', the REAL pity is, no one delves the little bit further it takes to get to the good stuff.

p.s. MISINFORMED opinions? What is an opinion after all than something I can call MY OWN, no need to be 1,000% INFORMED, my dear, for that then would be called FACT. NOT opinion. Silly.

Like I said, if you read the article you would see that technology, or contemporary times had little to do with this, but rather Tolkien was writing about the Alchemic tradition and the cylic pattern of the Four Ages, and his story inevitably deals with the Age of Man or Iron Age, and that this age too is going to end. That is the symbolism behind the Ring and what happens to all the creatures after the ring is destroyed and only ones left are the race of men.

Now whether you like it or not, there is meaning to it, and if you don't like it don't read it and don't listen to uncomfortable analyses that may burst your entertainment bubble, simply go and watch the movie.

Okkkk. If you have in fact read Tolkein, AND you read my ENTIRE post, and you think ALL I was talking about was the entertaining aspect, I would waste my time to type even a single letter more regarding the matter. And all this time mousie I thought you were right up there with the best at reading what someone is trying to say. I must have been wrong! Next time I will try to be more blond about it so that you will get my point 24 posts sooner.
