When a thread is started, and somebody comes and totally changes the focus/topic, moderator can split the thread into two separate threads. When threads are split into two, naturally there will be two starters of those threads, but the second doesn't necessarily have to be an actual thread starter. That helps keep things neat and clear. Same way, moderator can merge threads etc ...
