Guns (target shooting, home defense, etc)

...a little Christmas gift for myself.

I want to buy a pistol too. If I keep going to the range every week, it'll add up quickly ($16 for 45 min and 100 rounds).
Assuming I get one though, I'm not sure if I should get a .22 for target shooting and for the cheaper cost to fire or a 9mm which would be better for defense.

I'm not in the LA area for most of the year, but when I am, I tend to go to FiringLine in Burbank. There it's much more expensive, last time it was like 80+ for 2 people in 1 lane w/ 1 gun rental for about an hour.

Are you asking just to post or do you go too?

You can't just go if you don't know what you're doing. You need to go with someone experienced. If you do the wrong thing there, you'll either shoot yourself or someone else will shoot you (so you don't hurt anyone else).
I recommend taking a class.
