I was volunteering for the Burbank International Film Festival at Woodbury University today and overheard a professor talking about how he was going to teach a Screenwriting course next semester. I was introduced to him; he's fairly young and a graduate of USC.
Before I speak about Communcations, I just want to say I already know what I'm majoring in and have recently applied to film school. I will either study Film Studies or Film Production in Fall 2009. However, getting accepted to film school, especially as an undergraduate is tricky business. In the event I don't get accepted this year, which will really be disappointing, I was considering other options. I can apply again this time next year and hope to be admitted for Fall 2010. In the meantime, I can improve my film portfolio and get some more work experience.
I want to know if it's worth getting an undergraduate degree in something else, and getting an MA/MFA in Film. I'm already planning on getting an MA/MFA in Film regardless of what happens, but I really would like to do my undergraduate in Film as well. The ideal route is BA in Film Studies followed by MFA in Film Directing, or BFA in Film Production followed by MFA in Screenwriting.
However, I hadn't really looked into Communications at all. The curriculum available at Woodbury is almost idential to a Film Studies degree. They offer courses in Film Studies, Screenwriting, Editing, Film History, Film Noir, and Film and Literature. It also includes advertising/design courses, which make it an overall Communcations degree.
I'm always heard it's best to get your undergraduate degree, and move onto the bigger things. I honestly have plans to go for the MFA, and really hope to receive a PhD in Film Studies. I really admire Woodbury's campus; my sister and girlfriend already attend, and I know so much of the faculty. I didn't even know Communcations contained these courses, I had merely been complaining that they didn't have a film school!
So, is it worth considering this degree if I don't get into film school for Fall 2009? Applicants who are interested in an MFA are always encouraged to come from different backgrounds, so I've heard of many graduates who did their undergraduate work in Communcations. Basically, I'm just asking is it worth going for it, or should I just wait a year and apply to film school again? I'm not planning on making a career out of Communcations, but it's a great stepping stone to an education in film. The only downside is it's probably not the best education I can get in film; Chapman and USC offer an amazing variety of classes in Film Studies, so I'll be missing that opportunity. Or does it not quite matter because it's just a few classes on studies and history?
