    Biting requires provocation.

    Siggie jan,

you know why Federate wrote about Vartanants and our First Republic of May 28, 1918? Because he is proud to have been born in between those dynamic two dates. And our First Republic's commemoration is tomorrow. May 28th.

I'd like to take the opportunity to remind or give everyone a nice history lesson on this day. Two crucial events in Armenia's history happened on May 26.

    - On May 26, 451, Vartan Mamikonian led an army of 66 000 Armenians against the 200 000 strong Sassanid empire army in the Battle of Avarayr which is more famously known as the 'Vartanants paterazm'. The battle was for Armenia's right to openly practise Christianity and is viewed as one of the most important and glorious battles in our nation's history. While we lost this battle, the Sassanids agreed to give us our basic demand to the "right to religion". More here.

    - On May 26, 1918, the Battle of Sardarapat (Սարդարապատի ճակատամարտ) came to an end and the Armenian side came out victorious. Arguably the most important battle in Armenian history, the mighty Turkish army was a mere 40 km away from Yerevan and it was viewed that if Yerevan fell, it would bring about the final nail in the coffin in our nation's history. A fledgling nation full of refugees and barely with a standing army, Armenia rallied its troops and managed to crush the Turks and force them to retreat. This victory paved the way to Armenia's independence two days later on May 28, the first independent Armenia in hundreds of years. More here.
