Re: How do I as an Armenian make myself feel more European?

I looooove both Jgk's and Pedro's answers. How true! Armenians first brought great culture, architecture, armery and civilization much before than anyone else had it, except Egypt in it's own right. The Panthenon that the Greeks of today had it 5000 years ago, they learned it from us, yes from Armenians; because ours was first and it was built 9000 years ago. We were first to teach the world how to make armery products and the calendar. Europeans came much later than us. As a matter of fact the British people went from Armenia to the British Isle. It is written in their history books, check it John and you will see.

What are you babbling about, John? What "image" does Armenia have in the media? None at all. The only time Armenia is talked about is when the "controversial" subject of the genocide is brought up for whatever reason.

Secondly, who told you Armenians are trying to be "treated like Europeans"? Who told you we're interested in kissing Western ass to turn into another pussified liberal nation that lets fanatical Islamists run wild and reek havoc all over their nations? It is ironic that you criticize Armenia for "aligning" itself with Iran (which is not really true; "on friendly terms" doesn't equal alignment), thus making it seem less European, yet it is most of the Western powers that bow down to the Muslims in their midst (i.e. the "we mustn't offend the Muslims!!!" attitude amongst the US, UK, France, etc).

BTW, at least Armenia has an excuse for being an extremely poor country. It's a fledgling nation that has been ravaged by one power after another, and didn't regain independence till 18 years ago, so it is sill a fledgling nation at this point. What's Turkey's excuse for the 20%+ of the population living below poverty level? Why haven't they gotten their act together after almost 90 years?

Armenia is not a extremely poor country! I think this whole thread is bs, like what exactly is european and why should i feel like it? Armenia has a lot of everything in it european, asian, middle eastern influences and it has plenty of its own ancient and rich culture as well. I have never felt that i need to act or feel like i am american or european, i am what i am and i dont want to be anyone else thus acting in any way thats not me is just BS and i just wont do it. I think this thread should be chnaged to why in hells name would you want to make yourself more european!

If Armenians want to feel more European, they should wax their uni-brows, and some body hair so they don't look like a gorilla. Oh wait that doesn't make them look European, just human :P

Also i've seen some pretty horrendous fashion statements on Armenia tv, and it's not just the men, I mean there a burqas that look better than some of the outfits i've seen women wear in armenia.

Also Europeans would probably respect armos more if they left their hair natural instead of getting bad high-lights

I have to disagree with you Haykakan that Armenia is not an extremely poor country, matter of fact Armenia is an extremely poor country with very high levels of poverty in the urban areas and especially the rural which suffers from an almost non existent infrastructure.

Armenia's per capita is calculated at $2,658.053

Compared to Canada's Per Capita calculated at $48,427.283

There is plenty of other types evidence to support my statement about Armenia

Yes I have to agree with you about Turkey's level of development which is very poor and of course uneven. You raise a good point there. Turkey is a very very poor country indeed even though few of Turkey's major cities like Istanbul which would carry living standards similar to Vancouver, Istanbul's infrastructure is very developed when compared to Greece. Greece is a very backwards EU State.

Greece is certainly not a modern EU State at all. I have been to Greece a few times and have been very disappointed with the nation.

I think defining extremly poor would solve this issue best.

The words "extremely poor" related to Armenia means that Armenia suffers from poverty that is very very high and the poverty relates right across the country and not just one area.

Armenia's per capita is well below the world average which is another meaning of the word.

Extremely poor is classified when a countries citizens are living below US$0.50c a day. Unfortunately quite a big amount of Armenians especially children live under US$0.50c a day. The latest figure for Armenian children living in that extremely poor bracket is close to 50%

Poverty levels in Armenia are 10.6%

                    Armenia is an emerging Democracy

A poverty level of 10% doesnt qualify as extremely poor! You need to go see for yourself how the childeren there live. Armenia is no closer to being a democracy then is the USA. John you have a naive appreciation for all things western and a dislike to things eastern and you dont give Armenia the credit it deserves for having survived through extreme hardships and having emerged stronger then ever. If you are armenian or care about armenian issues then i urge you to go to Armenia and see what life there is realy like vs reading about it in some western oriented magazine.
