    I need some advice on the GREs

    I don't know why, but all the graduate schools I'm thinking of applying to now require GRE scores. They weren't required a year or two ago and considering I'm studying cinema, this is really worthless.

    I don't know anything about the GREs. Who here has taken them? Do you have any recommendations for study guides or books? There's probably a ton out there but I need something reliable. I've taken the SATs, so how similar are they to the GREs? Which is more difficult?

    How does the scoring system work? What's a good/decent score?

    I've heard from many people in my field that they require us to take GREs but don't weight them into our application that much. It's basically a school requirement and as long as they're not incredibly low, it doesn't affect our admission.

    Oh, and I know you can take them over and over. Do the schools know you retook them, or how does that process work? Can you just keep retaking them and submit the best score?

    I read one of the sample questions from the GRE test and I think I'd rather poke myself repeatedly in the eye with a dull pencil than to read through pages and pages of that crap.

      I believe you.

      That's why I was hoping there's a better study guide type book out there that focuses more on what's actually on the test, rather than meaningless sample questions.

      I'm not really good at standardized tests, so I just want to know what it's really like.

        Buy the one by Princeton Review. It is the one I used. It is straigh forward, no bs, and outlines everything you will see on the test and how to do well. Also, it answers your questions about how many times you can take it and if the school will see it.

            When I was in highschool I got books to help me out for the SAT and AP exams that had past exams in them at Barnes and Nobles, I've never taken a gre or looked at a book for one but i'm sure they might have a book that has past exams in it too, so if you have the time to check it out you should definitely go look

              Yeah, that's why I was asking if anybody has any experience with a particular book. They all look the same, on the surface.

                No. But the Princeton book I told you about gives you helpful hints and tips that save time on the math section.

                  no calculator. They see all scores and schools sometimes use average scores so don't take if unpreppared. Each section worth 800. It's harder than SAT.
                  Princton review has helpful strategies. I did the kaplan course. I didn't find it thaaaat helpful because I was already using most of their strategies, but otheres have felt it was worth the price.

                    Oh, my.

                    So, no calculator, the schools see all the scores, and it's harder than the SATs.
