Originally posted by Anonymouse Faith begins where reason ends. Science is limited, for human intelligence is limited. It is confined to the material world. It would stupid to go into a study of the material world, to seek answers for the immaterial. I would suggest anything except material science. Call it Occultism, mysticism, witchcraft, theology, gnosticism, whatever you wanna hyphenate, but please let's not pervert the biological sciences with something it doesn't deal with.
This is the kind of attitude I'm hoping to do away with. Consciousness is inherently the consciousness of brain states, so it is appropriate to study the brain to gain a better understanding. If there is indeed a spiritual side to human existence (which certainly has never been shown conclusively or even convincingly) then consciousness would likely be an interface between this aspect of personhood and the mental aspect (and by mental I mean brain states). Ignoring this fact to concentrate entirely on immaterial aspects to the phenomenon is a big part of the reason this has never been taken very seriously.
People said exactly what you're saying when astronomy first became a serious science. Same thing with psychiatry and biological studies of human behavior and interaction. Get your mind out of the fifteenth century.
