  • Business Person Or Employee

I know I should be working right now, but I was just thinking about this while I was "working". My boss just called me and told me to pick up his dry cleaning. Now, I have done this before, but this time, I just felt like an idiot. Why the hell should I pick up his dry cleaning? However, I started thinking about how it's so much less of a headache to work for someone else, rather than owning my own business. I know it's almost everyone's dream to own their own business, but I don't think I would want to do that. There's so much risk involved, so much more work, and so much more stress. Why not just get yourself into a huge company, that provides good pay with full benefits instead? Let me know what you all think....

Would you rather have job security and work for someone else, or would you want to be your own boss and own your own business?

He is the Dusken, owner and janitor of Dusken's Donuts. It is patently clear that he prefers owning his own business.

I wouldn't mind owning my own business either, as opposed to working for someone else, like The Dusken.

Small business is a tough game. The failure rate is 50% and the hours are ususally very long. Since you're out there totally on your own, you're gonna be doing everything. And I mean everything.

To be a good small business owner/manager you're gonna have to work for a few years and learn about an industry and then go into it. Small business is not for the easily frightened. But if you succeed it's great. It all depends on the industry and how good your management skills are. (Among other things)

I would love to have my own chocolate shop. Or coffee shop. Or both. I can conquer the world with chocolates and caffeine.

The difference with owning your own business is that if you do it right, you only have to work 80-hour weeks for 5-10 years, then you can either sell-out or delegate most of the responsibility to other people and reap the rewards. Plus, there is so much additional satisfaction involved when the success of the business is your success. Think of what you do as an employee. You work hard to make money for someone else, to contribute to someone else's success, so that they can give you a small percentage. Why not experience the success yourself, and be the person giving out the small percentage?
