    Grad School in L.A.

    Hey, I have a question about attending grad school in L.A / close to L.A. as a non-resident (international) student. Which one would cost the least? UCLA is very expensive from what I saw, and unless I get a fellowship that covers the whole cost and get Teaching Assistanship, there's no way in hell I can make it. What about USC or CSUN?

    I think the cheapest would be CSUN (close to $10,000 without residence expenses?)? UCLA costs $22,000 without rez, from what I understood. Does CSUN have any grad fellowships?

    USC would be most expensive. It is a private institution where UCLA is a public one. I would say go to UCLA or USC over CSUN if you can get in. They are both very well-ranked schools. CSUN has virtually no selectivity.

      Yes, I'd go to UCLA / USC if I could afford it. I just don't think I would, and the chances of me getting a fellowship are LOW because of my overall GPA...

        Also, look into Cal Poly Pomona. It is a bit out of the way but it is probably better than CSUN.

          Grad school at USC is at least 40K a year. More for international students, which is what you'll be, right? As for CSUN, I agree with Dusken, you'd be better off going to UCLA if you've gotten in. I guess since you're from out of state/international you don't qualify for financial aid, but have you thought of maybe a private loan? Also, if you TA wile you're a student you get a stipend (I know usc's is ~17k, I don't know about ucla), so you could try that...?

            Does USC happen to have any fellowships for non-residents?

            Also, would they tell you that you got a T.A. when you get admitted? I don't want to go there and burn my bridges only to be told that I'm not good enough to get a T.A. Do you have to apply to T.A. seperately or do they consider you when you apply to grad school anyway?

            Oh well, I guess I'll be stuck for another 2 years here in Toronto... *sigh*

              I have no idea about all those other specifics. Try the USC website. I CAN tell you that, especially in the engineering grad school, there are A LOT of international students (especially from India) so maybe they must have some kind of good payment program or something??? I doubt ALL of them are here on scholarship and/or can afford the tuition...

              So you'd do grad school in Toronto you mean? I didn't know you were done w/undergrad...

                lol, the Indian government pays for them on condition that they'd go back to India after finishing their studies. Some of them get scholarships too.

                I'm not done with undergrad yet. I have 24 credits (4 courses) to take and I'll be done. I'm graduating next year. So I need to apply to grad school this year. Well, it's a lot cheaper here in Toronto for grad school. Actually, it's even cheaper than undergrad school, and it's almost the same for international students and domestic students. And if I go to grad school at the same university I'm attending, I'd probably even put aside some money cos I'd most probably get a fellowship (99% of grad students get them) and a teaching assistantship. I just despise Toronto.

                  Why would you wanna come to L.A. for grad school? It's a horrible place. But then again, judging from your sexual orientation, I'd understand.
