I'd say first apply to the schools you consider going to. If you get in, then you can decide where to go. UCLA and USC are not that easy to get into. CSUN is very easy to get into but will limit you to Masters. That's not a problem though since if you do well there then you may be able to continue in a place like UCLA or USC.

As far as other schools in the LA area, don't bother. Obviously though, one of the most prestigious places for that major is UC Berkeley. And it's near San Francisco

Here's how much CSUN will cost you. That's by faaaar the cheapest and you shouldn't expect to find anything cheaper than that in California I would think. Although I could be wrong.

Looks like the History MA there needs like 30 units. So you could probably get it done in 1 year if you take 15 units per semester ... don't forget to add the $339 * 15 per semester to the costs above.

So something like $15K in tuition and maybe you can do history MA in one year. I don't know if it can be done though.

UCLA is not that hard to get in to, if you have the grades.

hmmm.. and to add to that, living expenses... Well, I might not apply to CSUN either, after all... I'll try with UCLA, but I don't think I'll get in, unless they have a quota for int'l students, and they'll take me anyway.

Anon: that's what I'm saying. My grades aren't that good.

And why aren't they? Are you a slacker? Or stupid? It's one or the other.

LOL. That's a false dichotomy! I am neither really. Just that the courses I took weren't really my thing.
