I learned the hard way man. When someone asks "How much do you want this job?" you get on your knees... it's a sad, sad state of things

Maybe instead of focusing too much on building and renovating roads (which is a necessity, yes, but not as much as the living conditions in various villages in Armenia and Gharapagh), we should focus more on finding short-term as well as long-term solutions to poverty in Armenia. My cousin's kid just came back from Armenia, and she told me something about old women fighting amongst themselves for a coupla sweaters they had taken with them to Artsakh as presents, and it broke my heart. Those people need our help more than they need those roads.

True, short term aid helps people get back onto their feet, and even if it's for a short period of time they have that window of oppertunity to do something quick and become sucsessful before xxxx gets bad again.

That's another way of seeing it, and many people, including myself, would agree. A solid infrastructure, however, will lead to a stronger economy. Better roads, for example, will lead to better business, and renovated museums and other touristic attractions will bring in more tourist money. And all this renovation is a very good short term solution to poverty. Many people can find work in construction now.

Not only that, there is also the culture of Armenia that is still at stake here. Museums in Armenia, who carry out a tremendous amount of research, will not only provide jobs, but will ensure that our culture is preserved, and developping.

We'd have to find the perfect balance of both I guess.

The Lincy fund, for example, has also spent HUUUUGE amounts of money rebuilding Gyumri, by providing housing, yevayln.

I've never been to Armenia, so I can't really give any valid opinion one what's going on in there.. but as a Diasporan, I have to be honest.. I see things getting better and not worse. I see more organizations poopping up, more publically speaking armenians, and more oppertunities for out people to come together then even just five or six years ago when I was just starting highschool. I'm a pessamist by nature, which is why it feels so weird to be so optimistic about our survival.

I see things getting better for Armenia, and things going horribly wrong in the Diaspora.

Language, in my humble opinion, is fundamental to the survival of any nation, which is why I am extremely pessimistic towards the state of the diaspora today.

Really? Weird, I have no idea what's going to happen in Amenia, but I feel us getting stronger around the world in Diaspora. And I don't see there being too big of a problem with language preservation.. I know some Armenians that are 2nd or even 3rd generation that speak pretty good Armenian.
