Created by a Christian monk around 610 CE while baking unleavened bread for lent. He shaped left over bread into the shape of people praying and called the new treats "pretiola" which is Latin for "little reward." That was the birth of the soft pretzel. Later on in pretzel history someone fell asleep while baking pretzels and that was the birth of hard pretzels. Also, and some point in time, pretzel makers were helpful in defending Vienna from invading Turks by hearing late night digging as they were preparing the following day's batch of pretzels.

Sometimes movie theatre pretzels are hard and stale. That sucks. The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. -- F. Scott Fitzgerald
