Last night was one of the craziest nights I have ever experienced at the hospital. I was waiting to assist on a hernia operation, when my instructor tells me "Do you want to do a C-section?" I said "No, I'll do the hernia." 30 sec's later I changed my mind and ran down to the labor and delivery floor. I met my preceptor and he says "We have 20 minutes to setup." I thought to myself "That's good, at least we have some time."
So we walked into the operating room, the second my hand touched the supplies the door flew open. The nurses were bringing the patient in and "Code Purple" was being announced. Code Purple means the mother is in distress. So it went from a calm room to organized chaos. There were doctors and nurses running in, the mom was crying, everything moved at the speed of light. I was opening supplies and throwing the wrappers on the floor and the nurse was cleaning up behind me. They get the mother on the bed and announce "The cord is around the baby's neck." Once the mother was put to sleep it took only 3 minutes to get the baby out. It was so weird actually seeing a live birth, it looks way different than tv. The baby was a little purple, but once the doctors started working on him, he started crying just like a newborn does. After the baby was out things calmed down a little, but the mother was still bleeding heavily. Once the bleeding was stopped it seemed like time went back to normal. In the end both mom and baby are ok.
