  • Anybody still collecting the hard stuff?

Is anyone still concerned with buying legitimate music CD's? All I hear about from people is mp3's and file swapping and burned CD's. If I know that the music of a band is worth being in my collection, I'll go and buy the CD. Otherwise, it's just not in my collection. I need to have the actual CD, the artwork, the liner notes... if I happen to have burned music or mp3's I don't view it as owning the music and I'll throw it away after a while or go and buy the friggin' CD. I'm a collector. I can't help it. And I also feel guilty if I'm not paying the artists for their work, however wealthy some may be. And I like going into a record store knowing I'm going to spend a certain amount of money and running through the isles. Good stuff. And not much compares to the feeling of walking out of the store with that bag.

I'm with you on this one. Also - my experiences with MP3s have generally been less then satisfying - they just dont meet my requirements in terms of quality - i can't take it really. I'm moving more towards higher end stuff - SACDs, DVD Audio, DTS - that sort of thing. And I collect as well and I think that the artists deserve to get paid (though I have my doubts about the record company's deserving their cut)

Yeah - every time I've tried to listen to them I can't - its like AM radio. I'd rather put a 33rpm on and listen to it - and why not? (well as long as I am at home - though I do still own a portable unit as well as my two home turntables)...of course I also own 2 Superbetas! (one with Beta 1 speed which is still pretty amazing quality) - no 8 tracks though (or reel to reel - anymore...) - but I still have my Nakamichi and a nice TEAC cassette deck...and speaking of record albums - I have thousands - I'll have to post a picture of all my albums sometime - I recently had a custom shelf set up (my design) made that lines up along the cieling in my loft area. I'm planning to start copying a number of my albums and cassettes (many live concert tapes etc) onto my computer - but no need to go MP3 - I'll take him at the highest bit rates I an manage - I have about 1.5 terrabytes of storage (primary [RAID array BTW])! yup -- leading edge and basically all the old formats still worth having as well - life is good!

That sounds excellent. I don't have any analog. For the moment, CD's are good enough for me. I only have about three hundred and fifty or so leaving so very many things I want. At this point, it just wouldn't be reasonable for me to worry about anything other than getting the CD's of the music I want to own and listen to. But I do have a Genesis album on vinyl that was purchased in the 70's. It's the first in what will be my future collection of progressive vinyl.

Genesis - a very good start. I'll have to get you a copy of the Lamb Lies Down - on video! Quality (Audio/video) not so good - but Peter's performance/costumes more then make up for it...yup have all the pre follow you follow me Genesis on Vinyl and CD - as well as PG & Steve Hacket solo stuff (I assume you are familiar yes?)

Yes. But I don't have much. From Genesis I only own "Lamb Lies Down...", "Trick of the Tail", and "Wind and Wuthering." I also have PG's "Security" and "Scratch" but that's it. I don't know which album it is that I have on vinyl because it's something that either my mother or father ended up with in one of their collections without knowing how. It's still in plastic!

You should know that there are German issues to PGs 2nd & 3rd (I think) albums (Melty faced one for sure...) - maybe more I don't know - where PG actually sings in German and where some of the musical arrangements are quite different (on at least some tunes - and if memory serves me quite a bit) - likely hard to come by now I would think - not sure (I only have these on CD)

I've seen the Gentle Giant remasters (Amazon) with good write ups....tempting. I have all on CD (Euro of one sort or another) - but the remastered quality would be nice...I may bite on Power and the Glory and A/B it with the one I have...always looking for better quality takes...just as with live/bootlegs!

If you like that remaster, move on to "In a Glass House."
