Network marketing isn't the same thing as a pyramid scheme. Pyramid scheme's generally don't sell an actual product, require one to make a large purchase of some sort up front, or just a large entry fee to become a rep, and pay for doing nothing more than recruiting other reps, whether or not they ever sell anything.
A legit network marketing company (something like Avon, for instance) requires that you actually sell something to get paid, or that reps in your downline sell something. Either way, you don't get money simply for building a large pyramid. That's nothing more than a redistribution of wealth within the company from schmucks at the bottom to the people who started it.
