There exist 3 types in nature: Mutualism (+:+), Commensalism (+:0), and Parasitism (+:-). There is also a fourth one - Selflessness - that could fit into any of the previous three. This latter one is debatable. Could there exist a truly selfless relationship in which one party will do anything for the benefit of the other party? In a more general aspect, do you believe that selfless acts exist?

I personally don't think they do, even between the mother and child. I will explain why I think so, if anyone cares to know.

What are your thoughts on this?

Haha, that smiley face is an accident. It indicates a plus and a minus.

    + = benefit
    - = harm
    0 = neither

all religions in general, specially Buddhism and Islam cover the concept of selflessness in relationships (and since they're religions, they often refer to relationships with God or the Ultimate)
      but yeah...of course there's selflessness.
it's a pretty high achievement and not everyone who seeks to reach it, is able to obtain it, since it's nothing you actually WORK on. it's an innerpower, and it's the ultimate way of showing Love.
I'm really curious about your explanations on why you think it doesn't exist...

Good topic. Some would say that selfless act do not exist because it implies the notion of a existent self, a fixed identity, a sense of you and I, of giver and receiver. As long as this sense of self is present the self will be affected and most likely rewarded with feelings of self-satisfaction and a sense that one has done well. Thus, maybe unknowingly, making
the intended selfless act a form of a selfish act. I am interested in hearing your thoughts also.

No, I dont think there are any selfless acts. Every action one takes towards another is selfish, even though it may be unconciously selfish.

Even acts of "goodness" are selfish acts, since often times, one does it for a reward, even doing something for the reward of self-satisfaction=selfishness.
          (as clubbin just metnioned)

and yes even between a mother and a child, husband and wife, brother and sister, there are no selfless acts.

This is all subjective you see for it can be argued either way.

No, I don't think it can.

You see, the example I brought up, between a mother and the child...most mothers (I'm talking about the sane ones) would do anything for their child, even give their lives. Since humans are animals - intelligent ones, but animals nevertheless - they possess the same instinct that all animals possess...to pass on their genes. Whether you like it or not, that's how it is. So basically, the reason the mother protects her child is for her genes to be passed on to the next generation.

And yes, self-satisfaction is selfish, like clubbin and spiral said.
