  • women and self defence

I was wondering if any of the women on this forum have any experiance with self-defense or anti-rape, seminars/classes.

I've seen a few women's self defense classes, and they do a good job in increasing a women's agressive mentality, but I think it also teaches misplaced confidence. The moves are often taught with a compliant partner, or some guy dressed like a punching bag walking toward them arms outstrectched like a zombie.

ive never personally taken any of those classes although i have been in kick boxing in the past, but i think the thing to remember is that these classes help prepare women or even men for a situation that may god forbid occur.
it helps them get into the mentality of what they should do when that flight or flight response takes into effect. they may not actually be conscious of what they may be doing but subconsciously they will go into that fight mode and use the tools they have learned in the classes to help them survive. hope this helped

What’s your opinion on weapons training and do you think women in general would be open to learning the use knives and guns in a self-defense program?

If I were to teach a women’s self defense program I would have a minimum of 20-30 hours of intensive, scenario-based training incorporating simple gross movements, adrenal-stress-response, state and local law pertaining to self defense, and extensive awareness and avoidance training. Possibly have the option for both knife and gun training upon completion of the empty-hand programs.

      Thanks for your help.

I'm considering taking a self-defense class. I take public transportation to and from campus and I've had to fend off drunks, guys who can't control their hormones, morons who think it's cool to follow me home and I've had two stalkers this past year. My self-defense strategy so far has been "if push comes to shove, kick them where the sun don't shine".

u know im not quite to sure if weapons may be that useful. for example,u mentioned knives on 1 hand if ur attacker had a knife maybe u could demonstrate how to maneuver ur way around it, but then again i think the focus could be better used elsewhere.
i personally believe that even in basic martial arts, weapon use should not be brought in until the basics of the discipline that is being studied is mastered.

            Aphrodit3 great strategy

Any form of resistants is a good way to get out of a sticky situation.

The Boston strangler one of the worlds most notorious and successful serial rapists and murderers said, when caught, that if anyone resisted in any way, he fled.

The reality is that most rapists are average looking guys, many married with normal enough looking lives. Although they of course come in all colors shapes and sizes Most are in the 5'-8" 160 lbs range. You can not look at someone and know that he is a rapist. Most attackers follow a very well documented pattern of attack. They select a victim, attempt to create a postion of advantage where they can have privacy and controll, and then they attempt to do what ever it is they are planning to do. There is one more important component...They do not wish to get caught. With this in mind victims are selected that appear to be the least aware and potentially resistant.

Anything that creates increased self confidense and awareness will serve to lesson the chance that an individual will get selectd in the first place. There are literally thousands of documented cases of women with no self defense training or MA backround fighting back against attackers and winning. It will always be that way. Just talk to any police officer about the statistics of women who comply vs women who resist.

Also it's called a gun licence, look into it. I'm not sure what the laws are like in California.....
I don't get why women hate guns. If I was smaller than everyone else, guns would be my best friend.
Guns (or knives, or any other weapons) would not be your best friend, if your attacker gets a hold of it. I know the chance of the attacker taking your weapon is not that great, but there is a chance indeed.

Why doesnt someone invent a great big metal suit that has about 4 inch thickness, and a bulletproof glass window so you can see where you go?

Hop in the suit and just walk around with that all day. You won't need any self-defence course nor any guns. And it's even better than a chastity belt if someone wants to rape you.

Well even if hit by a bus, you won't suffer all the damage as you would have if exposed to it with your flesh.
