  • The Death of an American Icon

Flags should be at half mast today... yesterday, Marvel Comics Publishing officially killed off Captain America (And before anyone points out how nerdy this, remmeber that you're wasting time on an internet forum in the first place ).

Even for people who don't care at all about the character (though I know there are one or two geeks lurking around on this site), I can't help but compare this to killing off Micky Mouse or something like that. Cap was really a huge icon. The death has even been getting main stream news coverage (and some NOT SO mainstream news converage, lol)

ABC and CNN Cover the Death of Captain America

News Special: Captain America is Dead (Geeky)

I can't help but be reminded of "The Death of Superman" and "World Without A Superman" storylines from the early nineties, which also got some mainstream publicity. Honestly, considering the post 9/11 world and what a charcater like Captain America inherently stands for, I think this will be even bigger than the Death of Superman.

However, like Superman, I hope Steve Rogers comes back in some way... as The Falcon, his best friend, said in the issue while he waited in the emergency room "Steve, you can't do this to me. I'm not ready for a world with out you in it... and neither is anyone else."

Wow, I'm way too invested in fictional characters...

However, one the economic side of things, this issue is flipping on ebay for anywhere from 50 to 75 dollars. Not bad for a 3.99 comic. Keeping my copy though...

Come on Armos! Let the not caring beginning!

      Shazam!

Oh wait, I think that was Captain Marvel.

      So how does he die?

Death of Superman? Hasn't he died like a billion times? There was even one villain who killed him several times.

Doomsday killed Superman first I believe, but the only reason they did that was so it could get hype and then they resurrected him in predictable fashion.

And Wolverine has had his Adamantium removed like twice by Magneto so you could see how even comics get redundant.
        Achkerov kute.
