Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

for those of you who don't know what stonehenge is...leave. this wouldn't concern you. 8)
anyway... so these stones were "assembled" (if I may) in 28,000 B.C.
but that's not the point of this thread.
in my architecture history class the other day, the instructor and some students were trying to figure out why this work of architecture doesn't have ceilings.
lol yeah... you heard me right...and the year I repeat was 28000 B.C.
I was totally thinking "what the hell r u guys talkin about" but I kept my mouth shut UNTIL... after loads of crappy stupid "theories", some student said "they didn't have ceilings so that they can be able to communicate with the skies or the divine" or whatever.. and the instructor TOTALLY agreed...
bottomline... don't you guys think we sometimes overanalyze the past with rediculous theories?
Stonehenge is the OLDEST found architectural work in the history of man kind =the closest understanding people who built it had about
    ceililngs was CAVES...
so ummm it's more like they didn't know such a concept exists... they weren't aware of the fact that ceilings can be built.duuuuuuuh...
so why do you guys think "big shot" people do that? why do they sit there and bullxxxx for hours about things that are dry straight simple...
so basically yeah... I said what I said to the instructor and now I'm considered this evil "rebel" in the class... which I totally don't mind 8)

I agree with you, Jahannam. People always over-analyze the past...something that they cannot possibly confirm. Take for example artists and poets. Those guys were depressed, drunk, or high half the time, not giving a xxxx about their works of art that they were creating. Most of them didn't even become famous until after their deaths. Yet look at all these "experts" trying to dissect these "masterpieces", attempting to figure out what the author meant. Maybe the author was a straightforward dope after all. I guess we'll never know.

Actually, art has meaning, reflecting the social issues of the era it was rarified in.

The artists reaction to these is the work produced, however, to attempt to explain what it aroused in the artist or how he felt, etc., is simply stupid on behalf of the self styled experts.

We will never know for sure what the purpose of the Stonehenge construction is, but I would tend to agree that the construction was probably motivated by superstition.
The rocks used to construct it were enormous, and completely inappropriate for building a shelter. There are no rocks of this kind in the area which means they were transported from far away, and it probably took hundreds of years to do so. Why would generation after generation of people spend their time and energy carrying these enormous rocks to this particular place? There has to be some significance to the place and the building, besides it being just a shelter.
Besides that the oldest architectural design is post and lintel, which are two bars holding up a third bar. The third bar being a roof.
I agree with the fact that it wasn't constructed for shelter. but just because they were cave people...
Because they didn't have the understanding of building shelters in the middle of nowhere. for them it was giant pieces of sculpture, mostly proving their understanding of nature (sun, stars, seasonal changes)...
hence the work's circular shape, and the size of the rocks that cast different lengths of shadows every hour of the day/ every season of the year.
just unbelievably advanced abilities for that era.
and one more thing... post and lintel is a construction METHOD.
Stonehenge is the oldest known architectural WORK, that included the post and lintel method.

People not only always over-analyze the past...the do it to the present and the future as well. i suppose everyone does it...some of us better then others.

J i think most peole say that it seems to have been designed to allow for observation of astronomical phenomena, things such as the summer and winter solstices, eclipses, basically the heavens, observing the rhythm of the moon & the sun. On June 21st the longest day, the sun appears behind one of the main stones, creating an "illusion" that it is balancing on the stone.

Some people may have needed to know info like this for farming practices, others say that it was a "temple"...but i think the most popular was 4 astronomical reasons.

j what ur 4getting to realize is that u need to understand and know the past to be ready for the future. i mean for the people of the time to have created the structure that they have is amazing because of the effort put into it...discovering the reason for it is basically the icing on the cake just to see if these people were advanced in their thinking. I say let the over-analyzer over analyze this gives the rest of us more time to go out and do something else. lol

                    correction...
I apologize to all of you as the time period on the suggested architectural work is 2800 BC
                    as opposed to 28000 lol
I dunno what I was thinking
