What amazes me about Edgar Degas is that he is like no other in his time. His style is unique and refined placing emphasis on draftsmanship yet at the same time sculpting, and it makes him stand out from the impressionists, romanticists, realists. Indeed he can better be referred to as a classicist in a unique sort of way, at least in the early part of his life emphasising the line and draft later to be something of his own creation, and indeed one of Norton Simon's favorite artists, since I worked in that museum.

His fascination with the ballerina is indeed obvious for he loved capturing them since they offered the movement in between movements.
This stuff is a delight!
