    Life hasn't changed much from thousands of years ago... only technology has (really since the mass production of the automobile, invention of television and computers). Science doesn't work any different than it has in the past... our understanding of the universe has increased by individual achievements throughout history (although some of what we understand may be proved to be false at a later time). The only threat to science is the very same institutions that control the patents and fund the research.

        There is corporate pressure as well (in my company for instance) for us to issue patents on our work. In my field (computer science), this is a bit ridiculous for most ideas have been around for a long time. We are just expanding upon them, sometimes combining things in a clever fashion, nothing more.

          That is why ingenuity is threatened. Why would anyone invent something knowing that the rights would belong to the corporation?

            Companies can't own anything you've invented and patented unless you've signed something explicitly allowing them to do so.

              Most companies won't even negotiate that clause out of the contract when you sign on. They own all the intellectual property rights.
