Consider a graph with two axis, one, representing distance along the ground from a specified reference point, and the other representing the altitude of the object above the ground. These two measurements are totally independent of each other. The distance measured along the ground can stay constant, while the altitude varies and vice versa. Such a graph is said to be in two dimension because the measurements concerned are independent of each other.
This would not be the case, for example of a graph representing the temperature and volume of a gas because these two measurements are dependent on each other. The higher the temperature the greater the volume and vice versa.
