  • Will Armenians be extinct in 100 years?

    What do you guys think?

I think they will, considering that the homeland itself is in dire straits, and the Armenians abroad...well they are just sort of wobbling around and not doing much and sort of indulging in commercial capitalism.

I would disagree with you, because in every country, state, city, or even viligases you will find an Armenian Family.

I respectfully disagree, because demographics are pretty obvious pieces of evidence.

I would not even be surprised that Armenians would be 'extinct' in less than 100 years. 20% of hayastanciner came here in the last 12 years.. And im so dissapointed to see that so many Armenians, even first and second generation ones in America barely speak Armenian. At this rate who will speak Armenian 50 years later..? If today's youth doesnt speak Armenian, What makes us think that they will have their children speak Armenian. And the fact that many young kids today dont value marrying an Armenian doesnt improve this situation. Yeah okay go to church , or as some say 'well our otar spouses will value our culture.' Ay martik chek haskanum vor Hyerene veranaluya? there is no culture, better yet nationality without a language.. 100 years later all our descendents, will be of 'armenian origin', and five of them may know a couple of words in Armenian. Ofcoarse we all dont want to think that this will never happen but, the facts are just too obvious....

I think you are opening up a whole new can of worms regarding culture consciousness which most modern Armenians in the diaspora are losing by the power of 10.

I mean in order to know what you want to preserve you must know or have some general idea of what it is. In this case it's a culture and people. I guess nowadays the definition of what it means to be "Armenian" differs greatly from person to person. Some think that if you go to or belong to the Armenian Church you are Armenian. Others think that if you speak a certain dialect you are Armenian, may it be eastern or western. Others think that if you go to ASA parties and UtopianDance hookups you are Armenian. Others think that in order to be Armenian you sport a certain style, mostly the rabies amongst us Hayastansis. With all these conflicting views on what it means to be Armenian it is no wonder Armenians themselves have no clear idea of what it is they represent. In fact there are more divisions amonst Armenians than there is any unifying force. Armenians worry about what breed of Armenian they are or what dialect they speak. They bicker over silly political issues and are divided in a whole bunch of sects in the same pointless religion. Few if any Armenians my age and I'm 20 would now sit down talk to an older Armenian, may it be their grandparents or anyone, and try to understand the struggles they went through and the weed they had to cut through. Few Armenians from the younger generation have any idea of the upheavels and billowy roads that their ancestors have been through and how they have survived torrents of time.

What you have to understand is the way this country tries to mold the minds of the masses. This country is more about materialism, being a corporate consumer lemming, and being apathetic than anything about culture. These involve not thinking much, no critical thinking at all, it involves totally alienating your culture to the culture of western corporate ideas, and if you look cross culturally amongst Asian immigrants, Hispanic etc you will see the same trends of the second generation being rebellious and apathetic and caught in superficial trends.

In any event if the people of a certain culture disappear then so does the culture and one can only look at history for examples of this. Non Armenians will not sustain Armenian culture as they were not the ones who created and sustained it for millenia. So it's foolish to believe that somehow this culture can survive without Armenians. It is illogical. Logic does not support this. If there are no people to create a culture, then how can culture itself exist? You need someone to ingnite the flame and spawn the culture for there to be any culture at all. I think it's a logical conclusion that if current trends are kept the way they are, it's only a matter of time before reading extinction dates about Armenia in the encyclopedia. Apologies for the lengthy post.

I was only referring to Asians and Hispanics within this country, since they are the ones directly exposed to American corporate culture.
