  • Ethical Consciousness

Why has every human culture--no matter how isolated--had words and/or symbols for good and evil and for the concept of sin? Is ethical consciousness the product of an evolutionary adaptation, a way of reasoning that emerged to make us a more survivable species?
The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. -- F. Scott Fitzgerald

I can already see this discussion between the non-believers and the believers, each attributing it to a different cause.

Care to explain what that has to do with good and evil, or humans making words or symbols for it?

Not really. I expect people to go from A to C with out my explaining B. It is a very complete answer that avoids the believer/non-believer discussion.

I think dusken is saying that since humans are social creatures, it is to be expected that they will have at least some innate sense of decency toward those in their own "pack."

                  Seems pretty reasonable.
