  • I bet Sudan wishes it had a huge oil supply right now

So... we've got a lot of military in Iraq, where we deposed a despot for no better reason (because WMD, conspiracy with Al Qaeda, etc., don't hold water, according to independent research) than our president thought it might be a good idea and he was excited about it because 'this is the guy who tried to assasinate my father!'. Granted, the guy wasn't good - he was downright evil, actually - and a lot of people weren't being treated well.

But as a result, our military is stretched to the limit when other things arise.... You know like FAR WORSE humanitarian situations than what Iraq faced? Too bad the Sudan doesn't have huge oil reserves. We might have been paying attention, or even accused them of harboring terrorists so we could bomb/invade/make them a colony....

    From CNN:
"The Sudanese government has been accused of helping Arab militias carry out an ethnic cleansing campaign against black Africans in Darfur, a charge it denies. Humanitarian groups estimate that 15,000 to 30,000 civilians have died in Darfur and more than a million have been displaced since fighting broke out in February 2003."

    From the Washington Post
"To ignore slaughter on this scale is to subscribe to an intolerably cramped view of Western interests, one that would drain foreign policy of its moral content, undermine its support among voters and damage the West's reputation in developing countries that already seek to paint high-minded Western rhetoric as hypocritical."

Colin Powell is there right now. But that's about it. That's about the extent of what we're doing. Ridiculous.

Ethnic cleansing and civils wars have been going on for years in Africa. Nothing will ever been done about it. The U.N. sends peacekeepers in who can't do anything about it. It's an ongoing cycle.

Um, in case you're curious, one of the major reasons there is conflict in Sudan is because of the large oil reserves there.

I am so heartbroken at what is going on in Sudan right now....its basically a genocide yet no one is doing anything about it..their just going to wait until everything is over and done with and then they'll say "thats too bad, we should have seen this coming, we should have done something, oh well, we'll get 'em next time."
We had a vigil at a local church here today, I didnt get to go but I was surprised and happy that their sending the word out, letting people know what's going on. There are a lot of Sudanese refugees that have moved here and I went to high school with one of them. He told me all the stories about the fighting and how his town was ambushed and he had to flee, traveling on foot everywhere, and eating anything in site. His family had been separated due to the ambush and he hasnt seen his mother or father since he was a kid, luckly he has found out that they are still alive, living in a refugee camp.
I dont think the US would do anything about this anyways, they didnt do anything before Sept. 11, so why should they care now? Its ridiculous though..I dont see how this Sudanese crisis is any different then Kosovo, yet the US managed to butt-in and "save the day," if u can call it that.
