Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

  • Logical Reasoning

I thought since I am studying for the LSATs right now and I am submerged in a world of logical reasoning, I would throw out some problems for you folks. See if you can solve them.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    13. Mystery stories often feature a brilliant detective and the detective's dull companion. Clues are presented in the story, and the companion wrongly infers an inaccurate solution to the mystery using the same clues that the detective uses to deduce the correct solution. Thus, the author's strategy of including the dull companion gives readers a chance to solve the mystery while also diverting them from the correct solution.

Which one of the following is most strongly supported by the information above?

    A) Most mystery stories feature a brilliant detective who solves the mystery presented in the story.
    B) Mystery readers often solve the mystery in a story simply by spotting the mistakes in the reasoning of the detective's dull companion in that story.
    C) Some mystery stories give readers enough clues to infer the correct solution to the mystery.
    D) The actions of the brilliant detective in a mystery story rarely divert readers from the actions of the detective's dull companion.
    E) The detective's dull companion in a mystery story generally uncovers the misleading clues that divert readers from the mystery's correct solution.

EDIT: For those of you who want to solve these before viewing the answers, I suggest you do not read past post #3.

    15. A few people who are bad writers simply cannot improve their writing, whether or not they receive instruction. Still, most bad writers can at least be taught to improve their writing enough so that they are no longer bad writers. However, no one can become a great writer simply by being taught how to be a better writer, since great writers must have not just skill, but also talent.

Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage above?

    A) All bad writers can become better writers
    B) All great writers had to be taught to become better writers.
    C) Some bad writers can never become great writers.
    D) Some bad writers can become great writers.
    E) Some great writers can be taught to be even better writers.

At Happywell, Inc., last year the average annual salary for dieticians was $50,000, while the average annual salary for physical therapists was $42,000. The average annual salary for all Happywell employees last year was $40,000.

If the information above is correct, which one of the following conclusions can properly be drawn on the basis of it?

      A) There were more physical therapists than dieticians at Happywell last year.
      B) There was no dietician at Happywell last year who earned less than the average for a physical therapist.
      C) At least one Happywell employee earned less than the average for a physical therapist last year.
      D) At least one physical therapist earned less than the lowest-paid Happywell dietician last year.
      E) At least one dietician earned more than the highest-paid Happywell physical therapist last year.

        Answer to number 1:

        I decided to elimate choices:
After reading the possible answers I eliminated:

B -- the information does not state anything about readers solving the mystery by spotting the faulty logic of the detective. The information states that the dull companion exists to divert the reader.

D -- nothing of the sort was presented in the descriptive paragraph

E -- it does not state that the dull companion "uncovers clues". It states that the dull companion "wrongly infers an inaccurate solution to the mystery using the same clues that the detective uses"

This leaves me with A and C.

I was very close with picking A.
However the flaw in that is the "Most". If it had said "some" like "C", I would have picked it.

I am unable to find a fallacy in C.

        My final answer is C!
        Dum dum dum.

Do I get to move on to the next question, or do I fail?

Dun Dun Dun! C stands for Correct and Confettis (which you get because you are correct)!

Now move on to the next ones. Bear in mind. Under LSAT rules you have pretty much 1 minute and 20 seconds for each question. Under timed circumstances it's quite a headache.

A and B are eliminated. Usually a reference to "all" can spell elimination.

E is eliminated since the paragraph clearly states that: "no one can become a great writer simply by being taught"

My final answer is D following the logic that a bad writer may improve his/her skill through instruction and end up being a better writer. And if this former "bad writer" has talent than he she has the potential to become a "great writer".

How long would this section take? I think I would start out well when alert and paying close attention, but start dropping in the end as the attention span starts wearing off.

By the way, I remember in college a few times when I did a great job at solving the wrong problem by not reading the problem carefully enough.

              I'll make #3 quick:

              My final answer is C.

Congrats sport you averaged a 2/3. The second problem choice had C for an answer.

"C) Some bad writers can never become great writers."

And the last one was C as well which you got. Of course, with proper rest and focus they are better solved. However, the problem is that even during the LSATs toward the end you start to lose it.

                I'll post some more up.

On completing both the course in experimental design and the developmental psychology course, Angela will have earned a degree in psychology. Since experimental design, which must be completed before taking developmental psychology, will not be offered until next term, it will be at least two terms before Angela gets her psychology degree.

If the statements above are all true, which one of the following must also be true?

                  A) The developmental psychology course Angela needs to take requires two terms to complete.
                  B) The course in experimental design is an easier course than the course in developmental psychology.
                  C) There are no prerequisites for the course in experimental design
                  D) Anyone who earns a degree in psychology from the university Angela attends will have completed the course in experimental design.
                  E) Once Angela completes the developmental psychology course, she will have earned a degree in psychology.

In a recent study, a group of subject had their normal daily caloric intake increased by 25 percent. This increase was entirely in the form of alcohol. Another group of similar subject had alcohol replace nonalcoholic sources of 25 percent of their normal daily caloric intake. All subjects gained body fat over the course of the study, and the amount of body fat gained was the same for both groups.

Which one of the following is most strongly supported by the information above?

                    A) Alcohol is metabolzied more quickly by the body than are other foods or drinks.
                    B) In the general population, alcohol is the primary cause of gains in body fat.
                    C) An increased amount of body fat does not necessarily imply a weight gain.
                    D) Body fat gain is not dependent solely on the number of calories one consumes.
                    E) The proportion of calories from alcohol in a diet is more significant for body fat gain than are the total calories from alcohol.
