There are a couple explanations. The most common one is:
Your mucus dries, thus clogging your nose; your body goes into "recovery" mode, opens up your mouth, through which you breathe through now and this dries your throat because your saliva is drying as well.
You may want to try "Breathe Rights" to keep your nasal passages open.. especially if you're prone to snoring.
My first thought this morning: "OH ----!!! I'm going to be late for school!!... Oh wait, I work today."
