  • Armenian with a not-Armenian girl

Hi, I'm 22 years old and I'm an Armenian. At the university I met a girl (latina). We've been together for almost 3 years and she has met my brother. She is willing to learn our languages and raise our childeren in an Armenian way. I'm just not sure my family will except her. She is very kind ans respectful. What do you think of all this?

I always liked Latinas more than Europeans or white Americans. They are warmer people and more family oriented Honestly, this isn't a matter for the forum to discuss. This is a matter between your family and her family. Obviously we encourage Armenians to be with Armenians, but that can't always be the case....

What if one is in such a position but the non-Armenian is afraid of not being accepted later if the couple eventually re-locates near an Armenian community because of a previous experience of someone else they know? Is there any advice on how to help that person adjust?

Well I don't see why a non-Armenian would expect to be accepted as Armenian in Armenian community. He or She is always going to be foreign in the Armenian community. But that's also true for all ethnicities. (except maybe Canadian/American)

True, but an odar parent who is more comfortable at Armenian events will be more easily inclined to take his kids to them and demonstrate the importance of that to the kids.

Well, yes, I guess, I don't have a problem going to Russian events, but I won't ever feel or be Russian. I won't ever feel part of the Russian community or nation. (nor will they ever accept me as one)

Do you feel highly out of place? Do you feel comfortable at Russian events? Why? How hard do think it is for that to change with someone?

I mean I might feel a bit more comfortable since there are some common Soviet elements in Armenian/Russian cultures, but beyond that no. I guess if as a foreigner you grew up in Russia you might feel more comfortable. As you see, in the end, it all has to do with what culture you were raised in and thus that culture you will always connect the most to, while other cultures, for the most part, just feel out of place.
