I'm not very religious, but I have read the Bible and I'll tell you that according to it, God is against sodomy. After all he destroyed the whole town for it. So, churches that oppose it strongly are free to do it as it is their faith, as long as they don't preach hate and intolerance.
Here's my thought.
If we take the Sodom and Gomorra story, there's actually a lesson in there to welcome all with open arms, even if they are gays. Lot, who is a prophet and thus an example for all Christians to follow, loved these people and did his best to save them all. He certainly didn't stand around with hateful posters yelling "Burn in Hell". So, while there's a clear plea in this story of the Bilble for us to love those that even God himself does not approve of, we skip right through it and arrive straight to the hatred and intense intolerance. In fact, that's my beef with many if not most self-proclaimed Christians. They utterly ignore the commanding lesson of the Bible which is to LOVE LOVE LOVE and instead the JUDGE, HATE, KILL in the name of the this love. Leave the judging (and killing) to God.
As far as Armenia is concerned, the homophobia has less to do with the religion and more with the machismo of the people. To an average Armenian male it is almost insulting to think of another male doing female acts in the bedroom. I certainly wish this part of Armenian society to dissipate, cause it's small and stupid. I don't care what people do in the bedroom. The only things that irritate me are public displays of homosexual affection (although same goes for heterosexual as well) and to a smaller degree overly effeminate mannerisms that some gays have. More than anything, I'm just not used to both things, which is why they bother me.. There's nothing in the Bible specifically that says the city was destroyed bcos of that. Plus it's not clear yet what makes people gay. Could be that they're born with it, could be the upbringing, there are facts to support both sides.
But we forget one main thing that the Christ said, don't judge, for you're not without a sin yourself. I don't know who goes to hell and who goes to heaven, but it would be very unfair if a good person who happens to be gay goes to hell while a crook who's straight goes to the same hell.
