Its funny, I have several co-workers of German decent. Germany seems like a completely alien entity to them. They know beer and Octoberfest though.

Correct. I am a cheese head and you should see the cemeteries where I live. Every tombstone pre 1940 not did it only have very strong Germanic names all the prayers and inscriptions were all in German. I even saw old indoor swimming pools with swastika tiles.

You probably live close to the "Germantown". I've been through there several times. They got that watertower with a German flag on it.

Once I worked with a mid-westerner from Wisconsin that was of German decent. He told me that until the Second World War, the "American Heartland" was a German stronghold. He said it was common to hear German being spoken in the streets and see German signs all around towns. However, he said, after the Second World War, the people stopped using the German language and even began adopting WASP sounding names.

Same here. I never came across Americans that identified themselves as "British". German, Poles, Italians never a "British".

Soon after the American revolution all the self-respecting British, estimated around quarter million, either left the country or were forced to move out, many going north to what later became Canada. Those British peoples (English, Scots, Welsh) that remained behind gradually abandoned the British identity and adopted an American identity and soon thereafter began breeding with the other segments of the newly created American population. As a result, it is very rare to find a family of British decent in America that is not mixed with other ethnics groups or identifies themselves British. Moreover, although the founding fathers of this land were of British decent, the majority of the population within the United States were of Germanic decent.

And the Germans here almost succeeded in making the German language the official language in the United States. I believe the German language proposal was defeated by a very narrow margin, I think by one or two votes. Once I worked with a mid-westerner from Wisconsin that was of German decent. Soon after the American Civil War the other major group in the United States became the Irish, who were fleeing their homeland due to various socio-political reasons and the famine. I think Americans of Irish decent are either number two or number three behind the Germans. Like the Germans and the British, the Irish also became effectively assimilated. However, the Irish did manage to maintain some form of an identity, this was perhaps due to the constant flow of Irish immigrants into the United States, the mistreatment they suffered, and the unresolved crisis in Norther Ireland.

Behind the Germans, the Irish and the British, you then had the fourth largest group, the African Blacks. After the Blacks, believe it or not, it is the Polish. And by the dawn of the twentieth century, the Italians, Scandinavians, various eastern Europeans and the Hispanics began coming into the country in large numbers. And towards the late twentieth century it was the Asians (Chinese and Koreans) and central Americans (Mexicans) pouring into the country in large numbers.

The Melting Pot: all of these ethnics groups have either been effectively assimilated or are in the process of being assimilated into the American way of life. America is truly a unique nation.

It's funny when I was a kid, dolmas weren't my favs either. But now I love the stuff.

I remember when I was like 5, at some large family/relatives gathering, the cabbage dolma was served as a main course. I threw a temper tantrum, locked myself in the bathroom while I absolutely refused to eat. Finally my mother gave in.

I never liked the grape leaves variety either, but now I can tolerate it -- and would eat it to avoid being rude in certain situations.

If I had to spend the rest of my life just eating that, I would die a VERY happy man! I couldn't probably say the same of those that might be forced to share the air in the same room or house with me after me eating that cabbage stuff though

Are you insinuating that they were outcasts in the Middle East, as compared to, for instance, Europe? Do you really think that's why Armenians in the Middle East managed to stay closer to their Armenian heritage?

Not at all. People in the Middle East are very nice and friendly they just aren't to our lifestyle. Religious behavioral differences that made it hard for Armenians to integrate. On the other hand in the West it took them 1 to 2 generations and they were happy campers.
