I'm sorry but you are being very rude to me. I can tell you I dont like meeting people through organizations I told you its very clicky and everyone knows everyone and their entire family. I come in as an outsider to a group of 30 who have known each other for 20 years. I tried it -was given the cold shoulder. That goes for any ethnic organization, I have Greek and Polish friends who feel the same way about their organizations. I tried the nearby church, on a full day theres about 5 people who attend. Only time I've seen more than that is Easter where its mobbed....

You know what NightOwl, I can't figure out if you are BS-ing me or if you are simply confused.

First you claim you don't meet Armenians, then you claim you meet Armenians but they don't like you. First you claim, there are no Armenians where you live then you say otherwise...

Stop making excuses, I think the problem lies within you. And your "priest," I would probably know who he is anyway, can go and "f" himself. Community "asses" such as him are the real problem. Like I suggested, join group of young adults going on a trip to Armenia, or go there as a volunteer with Birth Right Armenia. You will be surprised at how many Armenians with your "story" that you will meet.

I felt let down by Glendale because I always felt Armenians are warm friendly people and it was a let down to discover alot of them are not friendly to their fellow Armenian.

The priest at my church here agreed with me btw, he told me the armenians from the soviet union have a bad repuatation.. Again I mean no offense to anyone. Just repeating what he said.

Don't be silly, I don't "hate" you. However, I might be able to "hate" your parents for doing what they did to you. And I am not being "rude" to you, I'm just reacting to your less-than-smart comments. As a matter of fact, I see you being "rude" to the Armenian reality, in general.

I have that I'm from NYC in my profile, thats no secret and its true I grew up in a non-armenian area of NYC. My parents did not involves me with armenian events. And No I never meet any Armenian people.

There is no place in New York City that would be more than fifteen or thirty minutes away from an Armenian church, Armenian organization, Armenian establishment, Armenian student association, etc. So, stop the silly excuses. If you are honest about wanting to rediscover your heritage, than seek your kin, they happen to be all around you.

Its true what I said about Glendale, yes alot of the area is beautiul and nice but I did run into some nasty people. I met some nice people too, i would say its 50/50 between nice and nasty..One girl in a store I tried being friendly with i told her "Im armenian too", she gives me a dirty look. And yes that guy told me Im not full Armenian because Im too pale, I offered to show him photos of my grandparents who have blue eyes and red/brown hair. I was also critcized for not knowing Armenian.

This is simply silly none-sense. Do you apply this reasoning to Americans you happen to meet as well? Armenians are not a monolith, there are all types of Armenian in this world. Associate with the types you feel most comfortable with.

Like I said the Armenians who came here after the Genocide wanted to fit into America and did not force the language or culture on their children. Armenians who have migrated here in the 60s and after have a hard time understanding that. Its not my fault

Well, those types are essentially the "Americanized" morons within our society. Therefore, if you understand that some Armenian families don't care about cultural preservation, like yours, you should be able to understand how and why there are Armenians today who adopt foreign cultures.

Three types of Armenians based upon my experiences (they are essentially the same as your observation):

1) There are Armenian who are very comfortable with their heritage. They are proud of their national culture. They have a healthy balanced outlook towards issues that have to do with Armenia and Armenians. This type concerns itself with cultural preservation. This type also partakes in community events and they have a viable connection to the homeland. Let's call this type The Ideal Armenian.

2) There are Armenians who are proud Armenians but are somewhat uneasy about their identity. This type has some complexes for they see their identity as being vulnerable. Armenians are victims in their eyes. As a result, they are fanatically trying to prove something to the world: Armenian Genocide, Armenians are whites, Protection of Artsakh, Armenians are the best in the world, etc. Let's call this type the The Troubled Armenian.

3) There are Armenians who are insecure about their identity. They see their ethnicity as inferior to others. This type hates who they are. As a result, they are fanatically trying to assimilate into whatever niche they can fit into. Let's call this type The Self-hating Armenian.

4) There are Armenians that maintain an Armenian identity. This type partakes in Armenian community events. However, this type does not concern themselves with the homeland or preserving/passing on the Armenian heritage to the future generations. This type is essentially a good weather day Armenian, because they all disappear from the Armenian scene as soon as the going gets tough. Let's call this type The Average Armenian.

In my opinion, majority of Armos in the world today are more-or-less of the number four (4) type. However, the number one type, the Golden Core of our nation as I call it, although a minority, has always been with us and our very future is dependent upon them.

I wanted to add a small observation I've made in regards to self-awareness and comfort in one's ethnicity. Namely, I've noticed there are three types of Armenians:

1. The normal person: who is proud of and comfortable in his/her "skin"/ethnicity and unique habits/positives/negatives.

2. The fighting self-conscious Armenian: who are self-conscious and not in balance, but who are still fighting to prove something --- to themselves.

3 The classic self-hater who if given the chance would become some other ethnicity in a heartbeat: preferably some WASPy combo.

I believe because of untold pain and suffering, many of our people fall somewhere between 1 and 2. Then there are the low-lives who are firmly in the 3rd category. Also, it is my opinion that some of the blindest Armenian racists and nationalists do not belong in the 1st category either. Examples of these are the poor souls who on Stormfront were dying to prove that they're "white" to the trashonoids/trashopids.

I also liked Glendale when I visited. Now, I'm sure people who live there have many problems that any big city has: crime, a larger number of weirdos, more poverty, etc. But, one needs perspective. When I was there I also saw a vibrant community. It was a very Yerevan-like atmosphere: families with children strolling everywhere, lovers walking hand-in-hand. 100000 better than the depressing hills of Beverly Hills.

As far as, xxxxxing and moaning when you run into an uneducated geghaci/rabiz and being "scarred for life", you need to stop being so self-conscious about your own ethnicity. That's the root of your own problem. No Armenian who is comfortable with his/her own Armenianness makes such a huge deal about few Armenian rednecks. It's just sad.

Every time I have been to Glendale I have loved it. A great vibrant community. My hat's off to the Armos that have made it as such.

Glendale is considered one of the safest cities 100000 to 500000. In 1996 it was the 9th safest. Now I believe it's 40th from 332 cities.

On the list of safest cities overall, Glendale is 76th ahead of much less ethnic cities. In fact, from the list of predominantly ethnic cities, Glendale is probably the safest.

Dude, I have been there several time. Glendale is like what a typical Armenian town with a middle class/upper middle class population would be like. In my opinion, it is a great town. There are many decent folk that live there. Armenian cultural life there is vibrant and you can clearly see it in television, concerts, radio, theater, social/political organizations, newspapers, church, festivals, etc. The place is essentially run by Armenians, majority of them being Armenians from Armenia. Persian Armenians are probably the next largest Armenian group there. As I would expect, the entire business atmosphere there is run by Armenians and the politics in the town is run by Armenians. As a town, Glendale is very well kept and orderly. House prices are quite high as well. I have some good friends that moved there from NYC.

Glendale used to be a KKK stronghold. And that is the source of all the anti-Armenian folklore in the region. So take it with a grain of salt. Many years ago, Armenians were treated very badly by the "mighty whitey" in the region. However, Armenians slowly pushed them out of town. They essentially got bought out by the Valley Indians, which is what they called Armenians. Now, that bad treatment of Armenians by the "white European" types live on in the collective memory of the Armenian population of southern California. However, I have to also say that many of the Armenians that were feeling the Soviet collapse that settled there were usually from the uneducated strata of Armenian society. So, naturally, you can find ignorance and bad social behavior amongst Armenians in Glendale.

And yes, like all American towns, Glendale has its hoodlum types, again from low-income families. However, I personally have never interacted with those types. The type in question is not a problem for the town nor do they constitute a majority there. I suspect these types of individuals are more of a problem for the non-Armenians in the area (Mexicans & Blacks) and those Armenians that naturally attract them. So, one can visit Glendale and even live in Glendale without having any contact with the low-lives that live there.

I suggest you don't pay too much attention to what NightOwl is saying. I know many Armenians with pale skin and light features, and not once in my life have I heard an Armenian from Armenia say that the look in question is not Armenian. That's total BS. However, couple of times I have heard Armenians from Turkey and Lebanon make such comments. Anyway, after all her BS about living in a place where no Armenian has ever set foot in, it turns out that she lives in New York City I bet an Armenian establishment, or a youth group, or a student organization, or a church, or a community center - is within thirty minutes of where she lives.
