Re: Rising number of unvaccinated children in California
Yeah that would be dumb and that's probably why it doesn't happen. Each year they try to stay on top of the strains to produce an effective vaccine and they do.

I was referring to flu vaccines... not the major booster shots. I remember getting sick a lot as a child. I liked staying home and watching cartoons.Originally posted by Siggie View PostVaccines help build immunity, as Sip pointed out. They don't weaken your immunity. You got vaccinated in the "old country." I know I did... I got vaccinated for stuff in Iran that they don't vaccinate for here! For example Tuberculosis and Smallpox.
Wasn't the topic posted because certain people think vaccines might be the cause of autism... and related to exposure to mercury. I thought we were trying to unlink vaccines to something else gone awry in early child development?? SheeshOriginally posted by Siggie View PostThis is a whole different issue! This was a discussion about vaccinating children. You're turning it into something else. Stay on topic. If you want to talk about allergies, start another thread.
I was just implying that creating immunization to a non existing strain of a virus seems like needless spyware on your system.Originally posted by Siggie View PostIt's weakened. It doesn't stress the immune system much and even if it's not the same exact strain it can offer some protection. For example last years flu vaccine can still be somewhat helpful this year.
What vaccine are you talking about and what evidence is there that it would be harmful?

Re: Rising number of unvaccinated children in California
I suspect the peanut butter allergy thing has 2 separate factors .. again, I am just guessing here
First, we are now actually much more aware of such things. Sure it affects something like less than 1/2 percent of the population but at least if a kid just randomly dies in school, now we know why that was. Long ago, people probably had no clue .. especially in remote villages or places where there was no real medical expertise to diagnose something has strange as a deadly "peanut alergy" (I mean how often does it have to happen for people to connect the dots of peanut -> death!
Second, there are probably things we are doing now that have adverse side effects. Of course vaccines may be bad. Eating processed peanut butter may have horrible side effects. The problem is, without real scientific data, it is very easy to pontificate and blame this and that. We shouldn't just be affraid of new things .. at the same time, we shouldn't accept everything without questioning and investigating things either.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against immunization, I just think that there is something strange with all the kids with food allergies and weak immune systems and other ailments nowadays. What's this world coming to when you can't give your kid a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch because they go to school with other kids that have allergies. We didn't have these problems when I was growing up.

The problem is you and many others don't really understand how vaccines work. I am by no means an immunologist or even in the medical fields (I do know a bit about computer viruses thoughOriginally posted by ArmSurvival View PostBut either way I cannot grasp the logic behind the flu shot. The flu is something your body needs to go through every now and then so that your immune system gets practice and upgrades its defenses. I can understand the argument to give your kids shots for serious diseases (I've recieved these vaccines as well), but for the flu, its a bit much. The flu is more like a symptom that you are not taking care of your health.

So this whole argument that I need to get sick to build immunity isn't really a wise one with respect to trying to argue against vaccines. On the other hand, I certainly don't believe we should become paranoid germo-phobes and try to prevent ANY and ALL sort of sicknesses at any cost. I personally don't bother with the flu shot either since I haven't really gotten a serious flu for a long time anyway. But at the same time, I can definitely see a HUGE difference in quality of life with modern medicine and vaccinations compared to what humanity had to endure before.Last edited by Sip; 04-03-2009, 01:31 PM.

If you are at risk for respiratory complications if you do get the flu and the flu vaccine is safe and reduces your chances of getting it by 80%, why in the world would you not get it?
Healthy adults who get the vaccine do it because they just don't want to get the flu. Who can blame them for not wanting to be miserable for nearly a week and miss work because of it?
Do you actually subscribe to these beliefs or do you just look for opportunities to disagree with me for the sake of disagreeing?
And by the way... I think you know I'm not in medical school, so how is it that I'm spewing out what I've been taught (basically regurgitating) from classes I've never taken and you're somehow doing something different (presumably thinking)?
