Very nice article, my friend saw the fight he was telling me about the Armenian flags during the fight, and how good he looked out there.

More Thank You's go out to: Kevin Garnett, Steve Francis, Mike Bibby, Shaq, Carter, Ray Allen...Thank you for deciding that representing your country isn't important.

US Women's gymnastics reclaims a medal position by taking the silver in the team finals. Romania repeated the gold. USA could have taken the gold if it wasn't for critical tenths of points taken off for numerous faults. Congrats to them!

I'm glad they didn't. There's nothing more pathetic than a professional athlete showing up at the olympics and destroying what is truely pure and special about these contests.
              this post = teh win.

instead of having a team comprised of role players who can produce, they decided to pick players that sell jerseys....good marketing

FROM THE EUROPEAN OLYMPIC COMMUNITIES SITE

BREIF HISTORY OF ARMENIA'S OLYMPIC TRADITION

The history of Armenian sport takes it's beginning from ancient times. Sport in Armenia always was a one of the most important elements of the state's life. The traditional national festival of sport and art "Navasard" were a big success in the country like the famous Olympic Games in Greece.

Armenian sport had a strong reputation in the ancient sports world. The names of Armenian King Trdat of Arshakouni, who became the winner of the 265th Olympic Games in wrestling in 281 A.D. and King Varazdat, who was the champion of 291st Olympic Games in fighting (modern boxing) became the legends and symbols of Armenian sports history.

After the loss of statehood in the Middle Ages, the Armenian people didn't loose their love for sports. There were many national sport clubs and teams in many other countries where Armenians were living before the restoration of Armenian Statehood in 1918. That historic period was critical for the young Republic. The famous question of prince Hamlet, "to be or not to be", was very real for Armenia. But sport continued its life in the country.

The revival of statehood was a historical date for Armenian sport and it was not by accident at all that Armenia has always been one of the leading sports republics of the ex-USSR. Herein are only some facts that generally illustrate the sports history.

Thirty-five Armenian sportsmen have taken part in all the Olympic Games. Twelve of them won the champion's title 16 times, 14 sportsmen won 15 times silver and bronze medals in Olympiads, 23 sportsmen won 42 world championships, 37 sportsmen became European champions 55 times and 18 sportsmen won 22 World Cups.

Many of them are taking an active part not only in Armenian sports, but also in the life of international sports. The names of Olympic champions such as Hrant Shahinyan and Albert Azaryan (gymnastics), Vladimir Yengibaryan (boxing), Hrachya Petikyan (shooting), Yuri Vardanyan (weightlifting), World and European champions Benur Pashayan (wrestling) Yuri Sarkisyan (weightlifting), boxers Israel Akopkokhyan and Nshan Mounchyan and many others are well known in the sports world.

Armenian sport has earned a high reputation in the Summer Olympic Games of Barcelona '92 that was confirmed after the proclamation of Independence of Armenia in '91. Five Armenian athletes took part in the Olympiad and four of them earned three gold and one silver medal.

The National Olympic Committee of Armenia was founded in October 1991.
However September of 1993 became the historical date for Armenian sport. This was when the International Olympic Committee recognised the Armenian NOC. And in February 1994, the Republic of Armenia debuted for the first time in an Olympiad (winter Olympic Games-94 in Lillehammer) as an independent state and became integrated into the International Olympic Family.

Now Armenia not only is going to send athletes abroad for participation but also hopes to host international competitions. There are many high-class sports arenas in Armenia which were the sites of many prestigious tournaments. Among these there are "Hrazdan" stadium, Tsakhadzor sports base, velodrome, "Tzitzernakaberd" sport hall and many others.

An official IOC delegation has visited Armenia and the President, H.E. Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the ANOC Mr. Mario Vazquez-Raņa, EOC President, Dr. Jacques Rogge, and other members of the delegation became acquainted with the current sports situation in Armenia. The delegation's visit was very useful and lifted the hopes for all the Armenian people because the leaders of the international Olympic Organisations have promised to support sport in Armenia. The IOC, EOC, and ANOC always were helping the NOC of Armenia and it was very important for national sports.

The Armenian people are grateful to all the International Olympic Family for this backing. The NOC of Armenia, all sports organisations and sportsmen in the Republic are preparing for their participation in the international competitions. In spite of the economic crisis, blockades, the lack of many important products, electricity and gas, our sportsmen aimed for a worthy representation in '94 for the centennial year. And also for the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the modern Olympic games in '96. The two important dates in the world's sports history.

The Armenian sports organisations and sportsmen have began a dedicated preparation for the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000. The President, Mr. Benur Pashayan, and the Secretary General, Mr. Nshan MUNCHYAN, are proudly looking forward to continuing the NOC's tradition in these upcoming Games.
