Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

Re: Wanted - book or website recommendations

Well, Moogey I've got something for you. It is mentioned on page 918 a small description of your grand father which I quote textually 'Chahbazian, Manoug Eff., Medzaharousd, galvadzader, 'Chahbazian-Keshishian' vadjaradan pajnedir, azk. joghovagan (n@gare etch 770), vorteen e, Agheksantriap@nag eeravapan k@raked Stepan Chahbaz'
    or in english
Chahbazian Manoug Eff., wealthy, real estate owner, shareholder in the 'Chahbazian-Keshishian' stores, azkayeen joghovagan (I can not translate this one, since it is specifically armenian like taghakan, kavaragan, etc..) picture in page 770, his son is lawyer and litterature expert Stepan Chahbaz, living in Alexsandria
I also inserted your grand father's picture in the laptop for forward sending it to you through private mail (for confidentiality reasons), but so far I have been unable to paste it in. If you can, or someone can assist me by indicating the steps to follow, I will be grateful.
Also I would mention that it is really a small world not to say very small world because it seems that my ancestors and yours knew each other, since they were both azkayeen joghovagan and traders (my ggrand father was a cotton trader having offices in Adana, Mossul, Manchester and Beirut, so for sure they knew each other

Thank you so much. You can't imagine how exciting this is. I'm only sad that I can't tell my parents about this.

I'm sure someone will have an idea how to send the picture. All I can think of is to scan it if you have that facility, and there should be a means of sending it in an email, to click "send to email recipient" or some such instruction.

Thank you for translating - askayeen joghovagan is difficult to translate, but I understand it. "Someone who works for national affairs" is the nearest.

I don't suppose there is any mention of anyone who came before my grandfather.

Re: Wanted - book or website recommendations

Thanks Moogey for acknowledging receipt of your grandfather’s picture. I could not make it better since I took it with a digicam on macro mode. The book is very big with 1k+ pages and can’t fit in a scanner or a photocopying machine. Anyhow glad having served you. Also I would thank you for having searched at your end about my ancestor, but as I mentioned he had offices and these offices abroad were, - I presume-, for use of representation fulfilling administrative formalities for export or import, rather than business or stores and again I presume were run by local british for Manchester, and arabs for Beirut and Mossul and that’s why you did not find anything. Also I want to mention that finding your gfather’s name was quite easy because all families are enumerated at the end of the book but I could not find other Chahbazian or Chahbaz, except an article sent by Stepan Chahbaz to the author as his contribution to the elaboration of the book consisting of 12 pages which gives a detailed description of the Adanatsi(s)

This is interesting. It brings the long lost past to life, brings us closer to it. Do you know any more about the Adanatsi?

I appreciate it's difficult to scan the pages of a book. I have put the photo in my pictures. By the way, how did you come to have the book?

How can there have been "Turkish Armenian" life in the early 1900 pre World War I when there was no such thing as Turkey (except for the stuffed bird) ?

There was Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire.... and it shouldn't be called Turkish, more like Turkische from its Germanic roots.

this book has been sent from the author directly to my parents just after being published in 1970. I wonder if the Armenian Catholicossate of Antelias has still copies of it since it goes 40 years back or may be if it has been republished, better to contact them, but I will try my best to scan the pages written by S Chahbaz, of course without tearing the pages off, just pls give me some time to figure it how.

It's very kind of you, Vasbourakan, but please don't go to too much trouble, and certainly don't damage the book. Maybe just give me the gist of what's written.
I looked at the website of the Catholicosate, and the writer does not seem to be on the list. I can't see any email address, I'll look again.

The Plustek Opticbook 3600 scanner is very good for scanning books without damaging them (but rubbish at scanning anything other than books). You sometimes find used ones cheap on ebay for around $100. Or just use a digital camera.
