Largest public beach on lake Sevan to open next year


YEREVAN, October 2. / ARKA /. The Armenian government decided Thursday to allocate 9 hectares of lakeside area at the mountain Lake Sevan for the biggest public beach, deputy nature protection minister Simon Papyan said to reporters after a regular cabinet session.

According to the deputy minister, there are already 11 public beaches on Lake Sevan with a total area of 32.5 hectares.

"The new public beach will be 9 hectares and it will be the largest public beach in the country," said Papyan.

According to him, the new beach with a full package of services will be located near the railway station next to the village of Tsovagyugh.

According to the nature protection ministry, public beaches on Lake Sevan can accommodate more than two thousand people daily. In 2013 these beaches were used by 150,000 people, up from 100,000 in 2010.

Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region and is one of the largest fresh-water high-altitude lakes in the world. The lake is situated in the central part of Armenia, inside the Gegharkunik province, at the altitude of 1,900m above sea level.

The total surface area of its basin is about 5,000 km2, the lake itself is 940 km2, and the volume is 34.0 bln cubic metres. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. -

French Development Agency to provide Armenia with 75 million euro loan for rehabilitation of Vedi water reservoir

YEREVAN, November 26. /ARKA/. The Armenian government on Thursday approved the signing of a 75 million euro loan agreement with the French Development Agency that will be used to rehabilitate the Vedi reservoir.

Finance minister Gagik Khachatryan said the loan is to be repaid within 20 years. It is provided with a six-year grace period and at an interest rate that can not be higher than 6.25% and less than 0.25%.

He said the project when completed will alleviate the problem of water shortage in the Ararat Valley and allow the transition from mechanical to the gravity irrigation system, which, in turn, will result in saving of electricity.

Prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan said the government included the rehabilitation and construction of water reservoirs in the list of its priorities. He ordered all relevant bodies to ensure that the rehabilitation of Vedi reservoir start in January or February next year.-0-

CONSTRUCTION OF RADIOISOTOPE PRODUCTION CENTER IN ARMENIA COMING TO END

YEREVAN, December 1. /ARKA/. Construction of a radioisotope production
center in Armenia is already coming to an end, the press office of
the Armenian health ministry reported on Monday.

The centre construction is the first stage of the establishment of
a center of excellence in oncology.

Armen Muradyan, the Armenian health minister, visited the center on
Monday to see the job done there.

Now additional equipment is being assembled. In March 2015, CYCLONE
18/18 cyclotron accelerator made by Belgium's IBA Molecular was
installed in the center. It will be possible to carry out positron
emission tomography in the center.

The second stage of development of the project description of the
radiation treatment branch is under way now.

In 2009, the Armenian government decided to order establishment of a
nuclear medicine oncology center affiliated to the Yerevan Institute
of Physics. The center is run by Belgium's Global Medical Solutions.

The centre will consist of three high-tech sections - a laboratory
equipped by cyclotron for synthesis of radioisotopes, a diagnostic
center of positron emission tomography that makes early detection
of tumors possible and a clinic where patients will be treated by
radioisotopes. ---0---

PREHISTORIC ROCK PAINTINGS DISCOVERED CLOSE TO THE ANCIENT ARMENIAN CITY OF ANI

Fifteen rock paintings discovered in a village close to the ancient
city of Ani in Kars will play a significant role for the area to be
declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The head of the Culture and Arts Association in the eastern province of
Kars, Vedat Akcayöz, has said the registration of 15 rock paintings
discovered around the Alem village, some 11 kilometers away from the
ancient city of Ani on the Turkish-Armenian border, has been sent to
the Museum Directorate, adding the hope was to have the entire area
added to UNESCO's World Heritage list, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

Akcayöz said the 15 rock paintings carved on the rocks depicted
hunting scenes with horses, dogs, mountain goats, deer and humans.

He said that upon their application, Kars Museum Director Necmettin
Alp, Culture and Tourism Provincial Director Hakan Dogancay and Board
of Protection of Cultural Property Director Yasin Dursun had begun
works to register the Prehistoric-era rock paintings.

Akcayöz said they had asked for the region to be declared an
archaeological site, adding they hoped the ancient city of Ani and
its environment would be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list
in 2016.

Stating that the association had been supporting Kars' culture and
arts for 15 years, Akcayöz said the following:

"2016 will be a very important year for the future of Ani, Kars and
Turkish tourism. The Alem village is home to 15 rock paintings that
have never been examined and belong to humanity. The importance of
this discovery is that Ani and its environment dates back thousands
of years older than we had known. Therefore the inns, rock tombs
and settlements around the ancient city of Ani should be declared an
archaeological site as a whole. Works have started in the rock tombs.

On Nov. 24, a committee including the museum director, archaeologist
and art historians coordinated to collect the data for registration.

These rock paintings will play a significant role for the ruins of
Ani to be included in the UNESCO list in 2016."

The ancient Ani was once the capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom
that covered much of present-day Armenia and eastern Turkey. Ani is
protected on its eastern side by a ravine formed by the Akhurian River
and on its western side by the Bostanlar or Tzaghkotzadzor Valley. The
Akhurian is a branch of the Aras River and forms part of the current
border between Turkey and Armenia.

YEREVAN TO HOST IRAN-ARMENIA-GEORGIA-RUSSIA QUADRILATERAL MEETING

Iran's Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian has arrived in Armenia for
participation of the 13 sitting of Iran-Armenia Intergovernmental
Commission, IRNA news agency reported.

During H. Chitchian's visit to Yerevan, a memorandum of understanding
will be signed. The memorandum will cover a variety of spheres such
as energy, trade, culture, and environmental protection.

According to IRNA, in addition to the sitting of
Iran-Armenia Intergovernmental Commission, Yerevan will host
Iran-Armenia-Georgia-Russia quadrilateral meeting, during which issues
related to electricity swap will be discussed.
