North-South highway’s construction in Armenia to take 6-7 years

EREVAN, May 3. 2012 /ARKA/.

The construction of the North-South highway in Armenia may take 6-7 years, Armenia’s Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said in the interview with Shant TV channel.

The total cost of the North-South highway construction is estimated $1.5 billion, he said. The Prime Minister reminded that Armenia and Asian Development Bank had already signed 500-million-dollar financial agreement.

“It will be an absolutely new road the analogies of which have been never built in Armenia before. It will be constructed gradually.. Possibly, the construction will take 6-7 years,” Sargsyan said.

On April 26 during the Cabinet session the government approved the results of an open international tender for choosing a company to handle the implementation of the first and second phases of the project. The tender was won by Spanish Corsan Corvian Construccion Company. A joint venture Safege (Belgium) and Eptisa (Spain) was chosen as a contractor.

In the first phases of the project known as South-North Tansport Corridor three sections of roads will be reconstructed- Yerevan-Ashtarak (11.7 km), [B]Ararat -Yerevan (38 km)[see below] and Ashtarak-Talin (42 km). The project is funded by Armenia’s government and Asian Development Bank.

On January 14, 2010, Armenian government approved the program of North-South highway construction as well as the $500-million agreement signed between Armenia and Asian Development Bank. The credit agreement on the first $70-million tranche was signed on October 12, 2009, and the second $210 million tranche- on May 30 2011.

Railway North-South will allow the Armenian side to use the alternative route of transportation of energy resources and other goods, obtaining access to outside world. Currently, railway communications between Armenia and foreign countries is provided only through the territory of Georgia.

The project, initiated by Russia and Iran, implies expanding transport flows also by constructing new transport communication through Russia-Iran-India route .

Armenia and Iran are also considering construction of the railway between the two countries, which will become a part of North-South transport corridor. -0-

A project that nobody wants and nobody needs and that is only "great" and "wanted" if you are part of Armenia's criminal-political class who (like criminal-political classes everywhere) use such large-scale capital projects to get richer quicker.

I would like to hear from an actual knowledgable person(s) (not the butt wipe) on the merits and/or demerits of this highway please. Also an evaluation of oligarch involvement.

sorry I hadn't seen your initial question. I t seems like I have simply come to unconsciously ignore everything stated by the CANCER.
Yes somehow to mr. Cancer, an infrastructure project uniting the country, providing safer modernized roads, increasing travel, lowering business costs, while providing thousands of jobs is another negative for Armenia.

Armenia plans to benefit from Customs Union

Armenian analysts think that the country’s affiliation with the Customs and Eurasian Unions will be a serious push forward for the country’s economy. This will facilitate the increase of trade turnover, movement of people, and servicing of those operations.

The Armenian economy is already deeply integrated into the Russian economy, and has only continued to increase year by year. Around 45% of foreign direct investment to Armenia comes from Russia. Labor migrants from Armenia to Russia transfer around $1.5 billion from Russia to Armenia every year.

There are around 2.5 million Armenians in the Russian Federation. So, by entering the Customs and Eurasian Unions, the Armenian authorities think that it will become much easier for Armenians to travel throughout Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Union for labor or other reasons.

In this regard, Armenian analysts place great importance on the issue of restoring the Abkhazian segment of the railways connecting Russia with Georgia. According to their opinion, it would become one of the most active trade land connections between Russia and Armenia.

Some analysts also suggest that the Customs and Eurasian Union could facilitate the regulation of the Karabakh conflict as well.

Construction of Vardenis-Martakert Highway to Start Jan. 2014

YEREVAN (Arka)—The construction of the 72 mile-long Vardenis-Martakert road that will link Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh will commence in 2014 January, the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund said Friday.

The highway is expected to be a boon to the further socio-economic development of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia alike. By functioning as a direct road link, it will become a second lifeline between northern Armenia and northern Karabakh, significantly cutting down travel times, boosting the economies of Karabakh communities along its path, stimulating inter-community ties, and vastly improving geographic access for implementing local development initiatives.

Currently the only land-travel link between Karabakh and Armenia is the Goris-Stepanakert highway.

The construction of the second road will be funded by donations raised by the annual Thanksgiving Day Armenia Fund Telethon that secured more than $22.6 million for the project.

The Fund said today it had signed contracts with companies which won a tender to build the road.

Over the 20 years of its existence, the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund has funded construction of roads (over 295 miles), water mains (321 miles), gas pipelines (89 miles) and 43 miles of power lines. Apart from this, it constructed or reconstructed 334 schools, 424 dwelling buildings, 70 public health institutions, and 53 sports and cultural centers.

Hayastan All-Armenian Fund was established in 1992 to implement projects of national importance and help develop infrastructures in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. In general, projects worth a total of over $235.8 million were implemented in Armenia and Karabakh over 20 years of the Fund’s existence.
