In Armenia since 30th years of 20th century there are two strengthened areas on border with Turkey - № 7 near Gjumri and №9 near Armavir.

Astonishing that anyone can consider these obsolete 19th century Tsarist-period defenses have a place in modern warfare. In 1918 did they stop the Turks at Erzurum, or Sarikiamish, or Kars, or Alexandropol? Eastern Turkey is littered with these sort of fortified gun-positions, Ottoman and Russian, all of them long abandoned.

First, let us clear a couple of myths:

Myth 1: Armenians have 2 armies, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia and the Defense forces of the independent republic of Nagorno-Karabagh.
In fact, the above applies only for arms limitations and agreements purposes. In practice there is really one army with one central command. For example, an Armenian tank can waive the flag of the Republic of Armenia in the morning, and hoist the flag of NK in the afternoon.

The above is doing the work of Azeri propagandists. Does your bank account take cheques in Manats?

Armenia reduces expenses on defense


Under the 2010 state draft budget, expenses on RA defense will be reduce by AMD 19bln compared with the same figure this year.

RA Deputy Finance Minister Pavel Safaryan told NEWS.am that defense expenses-GDP ratio will remain unchanged — 3.5%. “Thus, there are no changes in this regard, though certain reduction is registered in total figures,” he underlined. Safaryan stated that AMD 112bln will be allocated to defense sector as compared to AMD 131bln in 2009.

So for a population of 3.2 million people, $290,000,000 million is spent on the military? And they claim the economy isn't doing well

Armenian dollar has also more value than Azeri one, since we get a lot of the Russian military hardware at its manufacture price. One of the good aspects of Armeno-Russian alliance.

It has always been like that where we spend among the highest militarily per GDP percentage. We are forced into this position because of the arms race between us and Azerbaijan which spends about 2 billion I believe. To make up for the deficit, our arms are purchased for cheaper and even given to us free of monetary charge while Azerbaijan buys for market price second hand weaponry.

If you look at the big picture, Armenia's GDP is what? roughly 2000 billion DRAMS? That's a lot of coin if you were to divide that up among the population. That's not coming from your average tax payer... that's for sure.
