              • Re: Nagorno-Karabagh: Military Balance Between Armenia & Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is concerned about the army's fighting capacity of NKR
In recent days, the Azeri media circulated originally published online net-fax analysis of a "Russian General Alexander Vasyaka of Army combat readiness of Armenia and Azerbaijan, their weapons, communications and so on.

Although the interview attempts to analyze a military combat capabilities of Azerbaijan and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, it is clear that the issues presented and the problem of grave concern to the Azerbaijani society. However, in a saturated military terms and historical facts of the text contains numerous promaxi and biased comments.

We know that Azerbaijan is seriously concerned layered defensive fortifications around the perimeter of the border Nagorno Karabakh. There is a very good understanding that the resumption of war will have to conduct an offensive battle and break through the defensive lines that will inevitably lead to massive losses. Therefore, the general Vasyak his analysis built on the same worn Azerbaijani propaganda thesis that purchased large quantities of weapons and military aircraft should be the force that will carry out their dream of capturing Karabagh. That is, the presence of the fortified defensive lines over the years offset wasted enormous resources of the Azerbaijani army.

It is no accident as a comparison "Ohanian line" with the defensive line Mannerheim. We hope that Vasyak knows the history of the Soviet-Finnish war. However, we want to recall that break defensive lines, even at the absolute superiority of weapons, has always been heavy and paired huge losses matter. During the Russo-Finnish War, Soviet losses during the first three months amounted to 140,000 dead and missing, more than 250,000 wounded. Losses on the Finnish side were less than almost five times. And this is the case that in the Finnish War the Soviet army in the human force three times the Finns, had six times more artillery, nearly 10 times more aircraft. All military historians of the time stated that in the Finnish army soldiers patriotism and moral atmosphere were at the highest level that can not be said about the Azerbaijani army.

In one of the questions Site Editor net-fax AA Sinitsyn said that the resumption of war important task of the Armenian side will be the organization of positional defense, and cites as an example of hostilities last period of the Karabakh war end 1993 - early 1994's, when Armenian forces fought defensive battle .

Sinitsyn and Vasyak again lead not complete facts. Yes, in December 1993., While initiated by Heydar Aliyev, large-scale offensive, a division of the NKR Defense Army switched to a deep layered defense. As the forces were too unequal (in the December Alievsky adventure involving nearly 80tys. Azerbaijani troops, hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles, dozens of planes and helicopters, artillery, etc.), the Armenian forces from the stubborn resistance of the retreating, throwing the opponent into separate groups and referrals. In February-March 1994. Azerbaijani armed forces began to bleed, offensive zaxlebnulos and NKR Defense Army, regrouped his forces, counter-attacked. The armed forces of Azerbaijan is not only lost their apparent advantage, but were forced to retreat, losing more territory and forcibly asking truce.

In vain in Azerbaijan are hoping that the new war the Armenian side would be satisfied with a static defense. This was repeatedly stated NKR Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Movses Hakobyan, who has extensive experience of the war against Azerbaijan. So the resumption of war in Azerbaijan waiting numerous surprises. The defense, retreat, and then counter-attack - these are tactics that have consistently applied, and will apply in wars of all time.

A good example of retreat, and surprise the enemy counter-attack is a case that occurred in early March 2008. on one of the leading positions Martakert region of NKR, when the Armenian watch, to avoid unnecessary losses, left defensive stronghold, retreat, and then moved to the offensive. As a result, the gamble Azerbaijani generals led to the fact that this republic has lost only 12 soldiers killed. But from what Vasyak concluded that the forces of the NKR should only defend themselves, it is difficult to say.

Citing the work of respected international military theorists, Vasyak concludes that in modern warfare, the challenge is to prompt control of the troops, and this can only be achieved with greater financial capacity of the state. But Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, according to Vasyaka, these opportunities do not. The General did not want to understand that operational control of troops carried out not in money but in a highly disciplined, interdependent actions of commanders and soldiers of all units. Of course, if the Army from humiliation desperate soldiers burst into the headquarters of the military unit and shot the officers, then this army will not save or 2 billion, or even the 20 billion dollar budget.

At the same time emphasize also that the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic have all the necessary financial means for subsistence, and combat capability of the army. Much attention is also given to the military-industrial complex that, with the resumption of the war, will provide an opportunity through their own efforts to provide the army with the necessary arms and logistical support.

One of the conclusions of General Vasyaka is that during the war, Azerbaijan will have a complete superiority in the air force. We do not want to argue on this issue, but noted that in 1993-94gg. When the air defense system of the NKR has not yet been fully establishement Azerbaijani air forces lost so many planes and helicopters that even ceased their combat use on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. With regard to the bombing sites of the Armenian army logistics and communications, then we recall that during the previous war Azerbaijani air force was bombing in the main towns and villages, and then - with a very great height.

According to our source from the headquarters of NKR today airspace of Nagorno-Karabakh is fully protected, and within minutes of defense can strike any target, including enemy territory. In this regard, the "conclusions" General Vasyaka too one-sided and sound like a theoretical justification of warlike leadership of Azerbaijan.

Although after the war took place exactly 16 years of Azerbaijani society to this day can not forget how their soldiers leaving the battlefield dead and wounded, retreated and fled from the smashing blows Army of Nagorno Karabakh. So it is quite clear "strategic analysis" Azeri "expert", whose goal is most likely an attempt to improve the morale of the army.

In one question, however, can not agree with the general Vasyaka quote: "The fact is - the most stubborn thing in the world. Do not forget the historical facts, gentlemen of the Caucasian Turks!

The much-touted Azeri media "Russian General Alexander Vasyak is Major-General of the armed forces of Azerbaijan Republic. He participated in the aggression against Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh, and many of the military defeat of the aggressor were a consequence of including intellectual disabilities A. Vasyaka.

It is also interesting that A. Vasyak is a member of the Editorial Board and military expert of the US-Azerbaijan Foundation for the Advancement of (!? - Ed.) Net-FAX.
